The arrival of a family transforms a neighborhood in Crimi's (Boris and Bella) good-natured tale about different styles and the rewards of adaptability. On Earmuffle Avenue, the "quiet neighbors stayed in their quiet homes doing quiet things" until the Louds move in and shatter the peace. Young readers are likely to delight in the Louds' conversations, which, in their depiction of typical family chaos, may carry a familiar ring. For example, when a neighbor telephones to ask for quiet: " `Will someone please answer the phone?' `Who took the remote for Pete's sake?' `The baby's eating the cat's food.' `Waaah!' The arrival of a family transforms a neighborhood in Crimi's (Boris and Bella) good-natured tale about different styles and the rewards of adaptability. On Earmuffle Avenue, the "quiet neighbors stayed in their quiet homes doing quiet things" until the Louds move in and shatter the peace. Young readers are likely to delight in the Louds' conversations, which, in their depiction of typical family chaos, may carry a familiar ring. For example, when a neighbor telephones to ask for quiet: " `Will someone please answer the phone?' `Who took the remote for Pete's sake?' `The baby's eating the cat's food.' `Waaah!' " The neighbors, aptly named Miss Shushermush, Mr. Pitterpatter and Miss Meekerton, rebuff the Louds' friendly overtures, refusing flowers and dinner invitations. Predictably, however, when the Louds disappear, the old-timers find themselves unexpectedly missing their cacophonous neighbors and regretting their lost opportunities. Fortunately, they get another chance. Characters and props appear in the forefront against white backdrops in Dunnick's (Fearless Fernie) paintings, which capture the neighbors' different temperaments: the Louds appear with open mouths, outstretched arms and splashily-patterned attire, in contrast to their hand-clutching, tight-lipped, conservatively clothed (not to mention pin-cushion and china figurine-collecting) neighbors. Good will triumphs over stylistic differences, and warmth and good humor abound in this satisfying tale. Ages 3-8. (Mar.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
School Library Journal
K-Gr 2-When the Loud family moves into a quiet neighborhood, bringing bashing and crashing, thump thumpity thumping, and clack clackity clacking, the neighbors become so distressed that they finally decide to ask the newcomers to quiet down. However, the family is nowhere to be found, and all of a sudden the neighborhood is quiet again. Too quiet. As the weeks pass, Miss Shushermush and the others begin to reflect on the Louds' friendliness, find that they miss the constant commotion, and begin making noise themselves. When the Louds return from a trip and invite everyone over for a pizza dinner, they all eat nosily-and burp loudly-together. This simple story is somewhat predictable, and while there is some fun language and the retro cartoon art is colorful, overall the book doesn't hold interest.-JoAnn Jonas, Chula Vista Public Library, San Diego, CA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
A new family shatters the hushed tranquility on Earmuffle Avenue in this sonic counterpart to Sam Swope's neglected classic The Araboolies of Liberty Street (1989). Cowering in their homes while the Louds crash about and bellow in CAPITAL LETTERS-"WILL SOMEONE PLEASE ANSWER THE PHONE? WHO TOOK THE REMOTE, FOR PETE'S SAKE? THE BABY'S EATING THE CAT'S FOOD. WAAAAH!"-neighbors Miss Shushermush, Mr. Pitterpatter and Miss Meekerton at last nerve themselves to lodge a complaint. But before they can, the Louds' house goes suddenly silent. Dunnick adds hand-lettered sound effects to crank the volume of his cartoon scenes, all of which feature pop-eyed, open-mouthed figures set in a well-kept suburban cul-de-sac, up even further. The lifestyle conflict ends, as in Arthur Howard's Hubbub Above (2005) and other takes on the premise, with reconciliation; the neighbors discover that they miss the noise, and so gladly join the returning Louds (who had been on a vacation) in a pizza party and a communal closing belch. A sound effort. (Picture book. 6-8)
