Gr 6 Up--De Angelis recounts the life of the current leader of the Nation of Islam. Including events up through April 1997, the narrative begins with a description of the bitter conflict between Farrakhan and the family of his former mentor, Malcolm X. In the remainder of the book, the subject's biographical history is eclipsed by the middle 35 pages, which detail the history of the Nation of Islam movement, with the author interweaving Farrakhan's life story at appropriate moments. These pages cover the roles of other influential black leaders such as Malcolm X, Elijah Muhammad, and Roy Wilkins. Although there are many quotes from Farrakhan, no sources are cited, rendering this volume less useful for serious research. The author reveals some pertinent facts about Farrakhan, clearly explains the evolution of his leadership, and clarifies the reasons for the controversy that surrounds him. However, keep in mind that this is not a traditional biography as it does not focus on Farrakhan himself.--Phyllis Graves, Creekwood Middle School, Kingwood, TX
