Loukoum, the little prince of Belleville - the African immigrant sector of Paris - is a ten-year old boy who rather innocently deals with love, family, politics, and religion. He chronicles what his family and he deal with over about a year. Beyala writes very well, though sometimes a reader could expect Loukoum to be years older than he actually is, because of how his character develops and thinks.
