Overview

In this stunning book, Alexandra Bonfante-Warren has chosen representative masterpieces from each of the Louvre's seven departments - Egyptian Antiquities, Oriental Antiquities, Greek and Roman Antiquities, Decorative Arts, Sculpture, Paintings, and Drawings - and made them available to armchair visitors in 300 color plate reproductions. Here are tomb paintings and sarcophagi from the Valley of the Kings, devotional altarpieces expressing the religious fervor of the Middle Ages, and masterpieces by Giotto, Raphael, Leonardo, Rembrandt, Rubens, Delacroix, David, Vermeer, and Ingres. The Louvre also contains photos and historical drawings of the architectural development of the fortress-turned-palace-turned- museum, as well as an engaging account of French history that helped form one of the most spectacular collections in the world.

I have been to the Louvre many times and wanted a book that would allow me to reminisce about those trips. This is much better than the souvenir books sold there. Great pictures and discussion. also you don't have to bring it back on the plane.

Purchased as a Christmas gift for a friend. I did flip thru the book and was impressed in not only the art at the Louvre, but about the history of the Louvre and the information provided about some of the art collection pieces. Now I wonder if I can talk my friend into a visit to Paris to actually see the Louvre.

Both the pictures and the narration of this book are wonderful. The reader not only gets a sense of what is in the Louvre but also some background information as well. I enjoyed the book very much.

The Louvre is a walk through the actual museum in Paris,France. A colorful collection of the best pieces of art through photos. If you have visited The Louvre in person, then you may say...this is a flashback in time. As you read through the book, you find all the details that you actually saw during your visit and even details that you may have missed! It is also an excellent book to get you ready for your visit or next visit to Paris, France. During this tough financial crisis you may not be ready to travel, so, grab your P.J.'s, get the book, and see you in France!

My wife and I bought this to do some "homework" prior to our upcoming trip to Paris. It is really helping us preparing our visit.
