Meet the Author

SHIRL HENKE lives in St. Louis, where she enjoys gardening in her yard and greenhouse, cooking holiday dinners for her family and listening to jazz. In addition to helping brainstorm and research her books, her husband Jim is “lion tamer” for their two wild young tomcats, Pewter and Sooty, geniuses at pillage and destruction.
Shirl has been a RITA finalist twice, and has won three Career Achievement Awards, an Industry Award and three Reviewer’s Choice Awards from Romantic Times.
“I wrote my first twenty-two novels in longhand with a ballpoint pen—it’s hard to get good quills these days,” she says. Dragged into the twenty-first century by her son Matt, a telecommunication specialist, Shirl now uses two of those “devil machines.” Another troglodyte bites the dust. Could not put it down! Great story!

This is an old-fashioned romance novel. And I mean "old-fashion" as a compliment It has romance, conflict, adventure, and exotic history. In the old days, readers called novels of this caliber "keepers." I still do.

I had this book in paper several years ago and read it until it was tattered. Then I lent it to a friend and never got it back. Isn't that always the way with the good ones? (Books, that is.) Getting this book back was like running into an old friend. It was great to be able to read it again on my NOOK, and I still love the story and characters.

I have never read a book where two different stories are in one single book. The story, the lay out of the places, the charecters and the way both stories blend in to each other, but at the same time are kept as two diffirent stories and completely diffirent charecters is just amazing. Mrs. Henke has amazed me with this book. LOVED it, if only more writers would take chances, but deliver a book straight from the heart of the writer to the heart of the reader, we would have more beautiful books than some writing mixed in with bad grammar, and jsut useless stories.

In this tale, Henke weaves history and romantic adventure seamlessly. I'm a fan of historical romance but often an author lets the history get in the way of the romance. But I have never known Shirl Henke to be guilty of that fault. The historical conflict usually mirrors the romantic conflict of the lovers in one way or another. This is an exciting book written by a top pro.
