Chapter 1

Paul Martinez loved everything about September on Gansett Island—from the cornflower-blue sky, to the cool fresh air and the quiet of the island returning to normal after another busy summer. The year-rounders got their island back in September. The tourists went home, back to school and work, after playing on Gansett all summer. During three crazy months, the island’s regular population of a few hundred hardy souls swelled to thousands.

As he drove home following a long day of landscaping work, Paul appreciated that the island roads had returned to “normal,” with hardly any cars, mopeds or bicycles impeding his ride. Islanders appreciated the tourists and the boost they brought to the economy. But they were also happy to see them go after Labor Day, when a collective sigh of relief greeted the cooler days and nights of September.

As the co-owner of Martinez Lawn & Garden, summer was Paul’s busiest time of year, followed closely by autumn, when the leaves turned brilliant colors before they dropped into yards that needed to be cleaned up before the winter set in. By the first of next month, the pumpkins would be in and ready to harvest.

A lot still had to be done before they settled in for the long, cold winter on Gansett. Other than plowing snow, their business slowed to a crawl in the winter, which was why Paul loved those months best of all. By the time the snow came, he was ready to sleep for months.

This fall promised to be extra busy with his older brother Alex’s upcoming wedding to Jenny Wilks and their move into the house they’d been building on land near the house where he and Alex had grown up. Paul hadn’t expected to still be living at home in his early thirties, but his mother’s dementia had derailed a lot of his plans, including having a family of his own.

Alex’s relationship with Jenny had given Paul hope that it might still happen for him, too, but he wasn’t holding his breath waiting for Cupid to strike, even if a lot of their friends had taken the plunge in the last few months.

His future sister-in-law had gone so far as to try to fix him up with her friend Erin, the island’s new lighthouse keeper. They’d hung out with Alex and Jenny a few times. He liked Erin and admired her resiliency after losing her twin brother—who had also been Jenny’s fiancé—during the 9/11 attacks on New York City. But he didn’t feel that spark of something extra with her, no matter how much Jenny might love to see both Martinez brothers fall for lighthouse keepers.

It wasn’t going to happen between him and Erin, and she knew it as much as he did.

A great story of Paul and Hope and the rest of the cast of Gansett island. I can't wait for the next installment of the series. She captured the facts of dementia and how people are affected by it. The love shared when tragedy strikes and how everyone supports one another. Can't wait for Mac and Linda's story.

This series was excellent. I couldn't put the books down, wanting to know what was going to happen next. I can't wait for book 14. I'm curious to read what happens with Erin and Slim as well as Paul and Hope. It will be interesting to see how Marion reacts to her new surroundings and all the changes in her family. I've pre-ordered the Novella telling Linda and Big Mac's love story.

Free book for honest review. juliesbookreview,blogspot.com Stars: 5 Marie Force delivers again in her 13th book of the Gansett Island Series with "Love After Dark". This series is a favorite among readers world-wide, and the latest installment doesn't disappoint. Paul Martinez has put his life on hold to run the family business as well as taking care of his ailing mother who suffers from dementia. Help arrives in the form of nurse Hope Russell and her lovable son, Ethan. Paul is immediately drawn to Hope, but he tables his attraction not wanting to upset the delicate balance of boss and employee that exists between them. Their attraction to one another grows stronger with each day, and Paul finds himself falling for not only the mom, but her young son as well. Hope is still battling ghosts from her past, though, and she's vowed to never depend on a man for anything again. Fiercely independent, Hope finally allows Paul in but the couple faces numerous struggles before they get it right. When circumstances suddenly change in their situation, Paul is left thinking he may lose Hope before they have a chance to make things work. Marie Force does an excellent job of developing this sexy, believable story while visiting other well-established characters in the series along the way. A few new faces are introduced that leave you anxious for more of the Gansett Island gang. If you love a great romantic series, then you'll want to read the complete Gansett series for sure. This is definitely a five star story! KD

I enjoyed revisiting the characters of Gansett Island. Paul and Hope's love story was wonderful. Although I wish there had been more 'meat' to their story. Another great read from Marie Force. Keep them coming!

Marie Force has written another winner. What was expected to highlight the wedding for Alex and Jenn also had us experience two illnesses resulting in death and a life transition. We saw the beginnings of two more romantic couples on Gansett Island. The island may very well see a new business and a new resident. Love how this series gives you endings and new beginnings in order to lead to more romantic stories. Great read.

Welcome back to Gansett Island! For fans of the MacCarthys and all of their friends, it's been long overdue. The author has been teasing us with Paul and Hope's story for a while now, so I was excited to actually read it. Before I jump into the story, I need to comment on the cover. The author actually used a real-life newlywed couple as her cover models for Paul and Hope. They are a perfect fit for Paul and Hope! I could just picture them as I read their story. It makes their love feel more real because we KNOW it's real! Paul and Hope are the feature of Love After Dark. Their love story is delightful. Hope is a single mother and feels the pressures of putting her child first, even at the sake of her own love. She can't get involved with her boss because she needs her job. But we all know that you can't fight love, and it's not long before Paul and Hope are involved. I was heartbroken for Paul and Hope as their relationship progresses and they decide, somewhat mutually, to go their separate ways. Thankfully, Paul has a good confidant in his brother, Alex, who smacks him upside the head and helps him realize what he needs to do to get his happily-ever-after. The author also includes a difficult storyline - dementia in a family member. Paul and Alex are dealing with the decline of their mother, which was what brought Hope into their lives initially. The author provides a sensitive and emotional look into the family struggles of living with a patient with dementia. My heart broke for Paul, Alex and Hope as they made tough decisions regarding her care. In typically Marie Force fashion, she gives us a check-in with many of our favorite residents of Gansett Island. And for the benefit of readers NEW to Marie Force, I will warn you right now. The residents of Gansett Island are very happy. I mean VERY happy. Maybe a better way to describe it is "sexually satisfied". The residents of Gansett Island have sex. A lot of sex. All the time, anywhere (can we say Blaine and Tiffany). If you aren't interested in a sneak peak in the sexual habits of some of our favorite Gansett Island residents, this book isn't for you. For the lovers of sensual contemporary romance that tugs at your heartstrings and makes you smile, you'll love Love After Dark.

I always love a trip back to Gansett Island! This book was like a trip back home. Paul and Hope's story was so sweet. The family aspect of dealing with dementia was so emotional. Such a terrible disease portrayed so well with the perfect loving sons. Hope was the perfect caregiver, never losing her patience. Hope and Paul were perfect together. Paul had been through so much and Hope became literally his hope for his future. I loved having the opportunity to catch up with other members of the island. The McCarthy's and the other residents of Gansett are some of my favorite characters! Thanks for the wonderful trip back Marie Force. It was great!

Love the Gansett Island series and I really enjoyed Hope and Paul's story... While it was very sad due to Paul's mothers increasing problem with dementia there were some bright spots, Alex and Jenny's wedding and Erin's meeting "Slim" (the next book)... Ms. Force has a way of dealing with real life situations and real people that makes her books compelling... She is a top 3 author for me... Loved this one and did not want it to end... Shamus and Carolina became guardians of two little boys whose single mom passed away and a new hospital for dementia and other patients with specific needs is in the works... A lot going on to keep this series going... This was book 13 and if you are not on board you are missing one of the best series ever... But, please start on book 1 because it "grows"...

I loved this book! Marie has done it again. Every time I read one of the Gansett Island books it is like getting together with great friends. This is Paul and Hope's HEA and it is a beautiful story. There are some ups and downs and some parts that want to make you cry. We also get to catch up with our other favorite Gansett couples and there is the beginning for a new couple or possibly two! (I won't give away who they are, you have to read the book to find out). I am definitely looking for the Novella in December about Big Mac and Linda's anniversary.

I have to say that this is the series that made me a fan of Marie Force...I took a chance on Maid for Love and fell in love immediately! I have purchased and read every book she has written...I am a fan of all of her works but this series truly is my favorite...with that said..she has not let me down with latest book in the series. This is Paul Martinez story..of how he is dedicated to caring for his mother who is suffering from dementia..both he and his brother struggle with doing what is right for their mother, as a result they hire Hope (a nurse) to care for her. Paul wants to have what his brother Alex has found with Jenny..love, the hope of being married and a family someday. He is immediately attracted to Hope and has a strong fondness for her son Ethan. He does his best to fight those feelings as he hears his father's words that you do not get involved with employees! As fate would have it Hope changes things with a kiss..In this book we have tears, heartbreak, laughter (especially the scene with the prospect of male strippers!) and of course of hot sexy scenes! Once I started this book I could not put it down and read until I no longer could stay awake and as I said before I was not disappointed. We see the other McCarthy's and meet some now people as well..Slim for instance and the prospect of Quinn Jared's brother along with seeing more of Kevin and Lisa's two boys...If you have not yet read any of this series you do not know what you are missing...Take a chance you will be so glad that you did! I know that I am so very happy I did!

It's another great addition to the Gansett Series. Not only do we get the story of Paul and Hope, but we get to visit with many of the other couples. You will cry, laugh and just smile with all that is happening on our favorite island.
