Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
In Love and Desire, art critic and curator William A. Ewing follows his acclaimed photography collection, The Body, with a survey of 150 years of photographic explorations of the ways that artists have used the camera to depict, celebrate, and confront these most vital human emotions. Included in this slipcased edition are images by such photographic giants as Man Ray, Robert Mapplethorpe, Julia Margaret Cameron, and Brassaï.
Booknews
This wonderfully small, thick book<-->like a box of photos<-->is divided up into the following categories: bonds (between partners and family members), icons (say, Jane Fonda as Barbarella), observations of glimpsed love or lust, come-ons to further naughtiness, tokens (mostly flowers juxtaposed with women), libidos (lusty acts), reveries (erotica), and obsessions (the sexual unusual). The international array of photographers includes Man Ray, Robert Mapplethorpe, Nan Goldin, Helmut Newton, Sally Mann, Immogen Cunningham, Brassa<:i>, and Julia Margaret Cameron. After a lengthy introduction on the history of photography and desire, there's nothing but photos there-on-in. You might just get aroused, or fascinated as to how others are aroused, or intrigued as to how far people go to arouse others. Ewing is director of the Mus<'e>e de l'Elysee in Lausanne, Switzerland. You could look at Love and Desire—Ewing's sequel to The Body—as a thoughtful exploration of the power of photography to capture the psychosexual complexities and ambiguities of human longing...Two centuries' worth of provocative pictures&#8212p;ranging from vintage family photos to slick Robert Mapplethorpe prints to hardcore French postcards—are assembled in this 400-page paperback, making it the perfect stocking stuffer for the arty onanist on your holiday gift list.

not quite as good as the body

this collection of photos isn't quite as good as his selection for the body. but there are many good photographs in it. the text of the chapters is well written and informative. some of the placement of the photos is confusing. all in all, a good book to have.
