Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The widely read expert and her coauthors offer precise, practical advice on the financial side of romance, in readily understood and often entertaining style. They recommend that men and women sign a pre-nuptial agreement on monetary matters and stress the value of such a document for live-in lovers as well. Throughout, the emphasis here is on the problems caused by a couple's failure to communicate. Partners should discuss funds candidly and plan their disposition on what is important to both. The need to review the program periodically is also a priority. There are details on budgeting when husband and wife are both employed; pensions and retirement provisions; tax liabilities; changes wrought by death, divorce, etc. A valuable guide. 50,000 first printing; $50,000 ad/promo. Porter was one of the first financial writers to recognize that women also manage money; Love and Money is a loose collection of articles by Porter and the contributors to her Personal Finance magazine on money management for couples. Advice is offered on how to keep a mistress (or even a gigolo), on cautious cohabiting, on getting married, and on such related perils as a female chief breadwinner, divorce, death, and shopping. The last and best section consists of six ``Budget Makeovers'' for couples with combined incomes of $45,000 to $60,000, with detailed help given in each true life case. A useful update on the impact of 1983-84 Social Security and tax law changes is included, but most chapters offer only superficial guidance. Public libraries subscribing to Porter's periodical will not need this work; others may find it a helpful update for more comprehensive works.
