Overview

Katherine Adams said she'd never make her sister Mary's mistakes. Mary's fairy-tale marriage into the wealthy, powerful Manning dynasty had turned into a nighmare of abuse. Then, on the night her playboy husband was killed in a car accident, Mary died in childbirth. Now savvy, smart, and very angry Katherine vowed to never let a Manning, any Manning, near Mary's child — not even the dashing, charismatic oil man who showed up at her door. Katherine wanted to believe Jason Manning wasn't like his ruthless family. But secrets and lies were part of his heritage. And Katherine could be destroyed by a truth she was afraid to face...and a man she could not resist.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
When her sister's abusive husband dies, and then her sister dies in childbirth, Kathryn Adams takes her newborn niece and hides her from the child's wealthy and overbearing grandparents. Jason Manning, her brother-in-law, finds Kathryn, determined to take his brother's daughter into his own custody. But they each discover the other is not what they imagined, and between the unwanted attraction that rises between them, and their love for the baby, they work out a compromise to provide the child with a permanent and loving home. Renée Raudman is adept at creating voices, and the characters are vividly and accurately portrayed. Her own voice in the narration is strong and mature, and in dialogue she slides from the youthful heroine to the older grandmotherly neighbor convincingly. Her performance does the male characters justice as needed, with the big and powerful hero sounding just that, and the old curmudgeon sidekick appropriately portrayed. First released 30 years ago (under Brown's pseudonym, Rachel Ryan) the slightly dated book is a classically fulfilling romance and an enjoyable listen. A Grand Central paperback. (Dec.)

I am a huge Sandra Brown fan, but this book was not one of her best. Usually, Sandra's female characters are strong and confident. In the beginning you think Katherine is strong but as the book goes on, she is weak and she lets Jason treat her like CRAP! I'm bummed because the reviews of this book were great and most people said they love the male character Jason. He is not kind, or sweet, or charing, and he is violent. He squeezes Katherine's arm very hard often, she is a afraid of him, and he says things to Katherine about another woman that is just hurtful. When I read a romance novel I want to read about a strong woman but more importantly I want a sweet, caring, rugged, charming male character. This novel fell flat for me, I couldn't wait for it to be over :( This book left me very unsatified :(

I first read this book ages ago--probably when it first came out. I gave my copy away and forgot the title but never the story. At long last I've found it again. This one is a keeper.

I always enjoy reading a Sandra Brown book and this one did not disappoint. Katherine Adams vowed never to make her sister Mary's mistake. Mary married into the wealthy and powerful Manning family and it quickly turned into a nightmare. Then on the day that her husband dies Mary dies after giving birth to their daughter Allison. Mary leaves the care of Allison to Katherine fearing the Manning's influence on the baby. Katherine sells everything and soon disappears with Allison. Just as Katherine and Allison settle into their new life Jace Manning shows up at her door for Allison. Jace Manning grew up as a pampered but forgotten child of the Manning but made a life for himself. Can Katherine trust that Jace is only their to protect Allison or is he just another conniving ruthless Manning?

Don't get pulled in by the overview. This was so unrealistic and outdated. The male figure was pompus as and the female was a push-over. And the romsnce was a joke. Waist of my time!

If your going to write a contemprary story can we please have some fact checking please?! For one, the baby is two months old then two days later she is four months old. Second, its a car SEAT nit a car BED! What in the world year was this set in? Third, East Texas is NOT half way across the country from Denver. This story may have been good but its overall awful. The writting is too wordy at times and the story seems to be on crack! Its as if the author had a deadline from her publisher and she vomitted this out over a weekend. Read Friction but don't waste your money on this.

I love Sandra Brown books, but I have to say this one was a disappointment. It was easy to put down. I did finish it, but the content didn't stay with me after I finished reading it. Looking forward to the next new release from Sandra and I hope it is a real page turner.

Terrible message for women. Always report sexual battery and attempted rape.

That is so gross that you would start a clan just to have se.x! This is a disgrace to all warrior cats.
