Love Divineby Anya Laurence
This concise and fact-filled biography of one of the most famous Americans of the 19th century begins with the expectation of an adultery trial. The great Protestant minister and abolitionist, Henry Ward Beecher, was the defendant, accused of having had sexual relations with one of his parishioners, who also happened to be the wife of his best friend.
All of Brooklyn seemed to be involved in the outcome, and Henry's own large family took sides, resulting in his wife never allowing one of his sisters to see or speak to him again.
The book explores Henry's early life, his marriage and journey to Indiana where his first pastorate awaited, and takes the reader to Indianapolis and finally to Brooklyn, New York, to the Plymouth Church and Henry's destiny.
Henry Ward Beecher's life was grounded in his father, Lyman Beecher's austere and frightening theology, yet he became a man who lived, breathed and preached love.whether wisely or not is up to the reader to decide.

Canadian author Anya Laurence has successfully compacted the long and brilliant career of Henry Ward Beecher into one easily digestible volume. Ms. Laurence shows her readers the results of massive amounts of research compiled with taut editing. The author's professionalism shines from the inclusion of a bibliography and index, and the many referenced footnotes have been thankfully abbreviated. Beecher's life from birth to death is covered in the text, with a reasonable explanation of the great man's mysterious affair with a friend's wife included. No one except the two persons involved, or not, actually knows the truth, and they carried it to their graves. Ms. Laurence leaves the reader to decide Henry's guilt or innocence without falsely claiming to know the truth herself. Love Divine is a wonderful, brief assessment of Henry Beecher's life and accomplishments. Anya Laurence has proven herself to be a highly meticulous researcher and an articulate writer of nonfiction.
