Overview

This disc is disguised as a plain old club-friendly DJ mix of smooth and jazzy grooves, but actually serves a sort of dual purpose for the Ubiquity label: it brings together a bunch of previously unreleased-on-CD 12" singles and also serves as a sneak preview of upcoming full-length releases from the artists featured. Most of the artists will be familiar primarily to denizens of the San Francisco club scene, but fans of club music and acid jazz from both coasts will be sure to recognize names like Greyboy and John Beltran. The mood of this program is remarkably -- perhaps a tad oppressively -- consistent, but the textures and flavors vary nicely, from Beatles' psychedelically groovy "Love From the Sun" to the Afro-pop inflections of E.W. Wainwright and the funky Latin jazz of Loqate. The mix, by DJ (and Ubiquity VP) Andrew Jervis, is undeniably masterful. Strongly recommended.
