Overview

When the flirtatious nineteen year-old Alyce Hicks fell in love with a fun-loving bank clerk in the depths of the Great Depression, the couple struggled to save enough money to have a church wedding and rent a bungalow. But postponing the wedding two years was a minor setback compared to what the couple would face in 64 years of marriage. During World War II Alyce's husband was drafted at age 35 and sent to the Fiji Islands, leaving Alyce to man the home front with four small children. When he returned from the war, the couple resumed their active lives with their many friends, their large family, and their growing number of children. While raising 11 children, including a severely disabled son, they managed to volunteer for charity work in Mobile's Catholic community and still find time to enjoy Mobile's Mardi Gras season of parades and balls. Now, at age 99 as Alyce looks back on her long and productive life, we realize she not only survived the difficult times, she prevailed and triumphed.
