Overview

Roma Downey, star of the heartwarming television series Touched by an Angel, has a beautiful message for all families."Sometimes I wish I had sisters, or a dad who lived with me, or at least a brother or something! "said Lily.

"I know, " said Mama. "Sometimes I wish that, too. But most of the time our little family feels just right to me. Love is what makes a family, and we've got plenty of that."

Irrepressible young Lily loves her mother dearly. But when it's time for Family Fun Night at her school, she worries...and worries. What will the other kids think when she just brings her mother? Will they be the strangest family there?

But when they arrive at Family Fun Night, Lily sees all her friends having fun with their families — of every shape, size, and-color. She learns that there are as many ways of showing love as there are stars in the sky.

In this enchanting, beautifully illustrated story, beloved actress Roma Downey shows children that family should not be defined by mother, father, and child, but by love.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Lily and her mama live alone, but Lily wants a real family, like Melissa. Melissa's house is never neat and never quiet. Melissa has a mother and a father and brothers and sisters. Lily is afraid that when she goes to Family Fun Night with her mama they will be the strangest family there. Lily's mama tries to explain that love is what makes a family, not the people in the family, but Lily remains unconvinced¾until they go to Family Fun Night. When Lily and her mama arrive there are already plenty of families there. Some are like Melissa's family with a mother, father, sisters and brothers. But Remi's family is just Remi and her dad. And there are families with adopted children, and families with different colored skin, and families that are grandparents and grandchildren. Lily finally realizes that it is love that makes a family and not two parents and children. Richly illustrated with full-page color pictures, this book teaches an important lesson for all children. 2001, Derry-Air, $16.95. Ages 5 to 8. Reviewer:Danielle Williams

K-Gr 2-It is time for Family Fun Night at school and Lily, who lives with her single mother, wishes she could go with a "real" family. Her mother tells her, "-most of the time our little family feels just right to me. Love is what makes a family, and we've got plenty of that." The child's fears about feeling uncomfortable at the event turn out to be unfounded. Lily and her mom meet a girl whose mother has died, leaving her alone with her dad; an adopted child; two brothers who live with their grandparents; stepfamilies; and half brothers and half sisters. The paintings have childlike perspectives and are effective in showing the young protagonist standing alone in her ordered, quiet home in contrast to the busy activity of the large, noisy household next door. The book sensitively addresses the issue of being different and finding common values in diversity. Children in nontraditional families might feel reassured by having their situation affirmed, but the message overpowers the thin story line.-Adele Greenlee, Bethel College, St. Paul, MN Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
