All Music Guide - John Bush
Even before their first session together, Barbra Streisand and collaborator Diana Krall designed Love Is the Answer as a deeply emotional record: "each song an exploration concerning matters of the heart." And with the arrangements of maestro Johnny Mandel simply drawing occasional shading around Streisand's expressive voice -- and often leaving her voice as the only instrument -- the album goes well beyond the usual saloon-song tropes to become a heart-wrenching experience with virtually every song. Additionally, although much was made of the collaboration, Krall's piano stays in the background, and Streisand's is the only voice heard. But the song choices also were tailored...

But the song choices also were tailored to maximize the emotional impact of Love Is the Answer, and Streisand's incomparable voice. Nearly every song is a classic of tender balladry, despite the fact that none had been put on album by Streisand before during her long career. Those facts alone should leave Streisand fans in ecstasy, as practically nothing stands in the way of her voice as she sings some of the best songs of the last century, aching and sincere with every melancholy or lovelorn ballad, tenderly strident with every (ultimately) uplifting anthem. "Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most" opens up like a flower akin to some of her best performances, and the same goes for "Make Someone Happy," composed by the classic team of Jule Styne, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green (Styne composed the music for Streisand's Funny Girl). Elsewhere, more classics of the American songbook -- "Here's That Rainy Day," "Where Do You Start?," "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning," "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," "Gentle Rain" -- prove themselves irresistible to the Barbra Streisand treatment. The overall effect is that this is one of the Streisand albums most appealing to her fans and her potential fans -- which includes nearly everyone who appreciates a singer singing like she's lived every line of her songs. [The Deluxe Edition of Love Is the Answer includes a bonus disc with the album's original quartet versions, before Mandel's arrangements were added.]

    As good as ever...

Unique voice that is Steisand's alone. both discs have moments but the arrangements are not special on some tracks unfortunately. However, her interpretations are always interesting, even if her spin on a song isn't exactly what I had hoped for.

DISC # 2 IS THE REASON IT'S #1 IN THE NATION

#1 Barbra & disc #2 is the Answer

Those who were disappointed on first hearing -- spin it again! The vocals are amazing! Barbra has been on top for nearly half a century and this disc proves that the world is right, the performance is simply stunning Streisand! You will love it, if not immediately you will understand it's brilliance very soon... She is indeed Gods Greatest Gift To The human ear!

    QUIET PLEASE - THERE'S A LADY SINGING

The entire album, both orchestral and quartet version is "delicious". As Barbra's long time collaborator, Jay Landers, says in his booklet notes, "turn up the quiet" and "you'll here the sound of intimacy". Very very true. I never really liked the Brel piece "If You Go Away", but Barbra nails it in this new version. "Gentle Rain" is a stand-out for me, as is "Where Do You Start" by the Bergmans.

This is "by the fireplace" music, or "candlelight music" or "have a glass of wine with dimmed or no lights music". Not a dud anywhere. I am sad there is no duet or vocal with Diana Krall, but Diana should be so proud of her production. It is top notch, with Johnny Mandel's exceptional arrangements.

This is a definite keeper. With all the noise out there these days, even in the music business, this is Barbra's way of saying "Shhhhhh" very softly and calming you down.

Barbara I will always Love You

I have been a Streisand fan since I have seen her in Funny Girl in the Winter Garden in 1960's. I used to buy her albums at EJ Korvettes on 47th Street and 5th Ave - they were always the 'E' albums for those of you that remember.

I have almost all of her CD's but this one is one of the best if not the best.

When you listen to it it makes you feel that you are in an intimate lounge, and she is singing just to you.

I loved it so much I gave one to a very dear friend for the Holidays.

Barbara I will always love you.

    Signed,

    Grandpajoe

Barbra Streisand does some jazz and easy listening on this CD. She sounds great and she follows her heart.
