In “Love Like God,” author Caroline A. Shearer has collected numerous real life stories that exemplify the true meaning of loving unconditionally. People often misconceive what it means, myself included. I personally learned a lot from this book. The stories are deeply touching and the people who contributed them are so admirable and brave for sharing their sometimes dark and trying journeys which were made so much brighter through unconditional love. Jesse Birkey’s essay about an unfaithful spouse really stood out to me. As I was reading, I could really feel what he was going through. I shared both his despair and his forgiveness and understood it all. I can only hope I could be as strong if I were in that situation. In between the stories, Caroline gives us plenty of food for thought, amazing affirmations which allow us to sit back and absorb more deeply what we just read. I’ve learned that forgiveness is such an important element to loving unconditionally, and in turn being happier in life overall. Obviously, a book can’t make you change your actions, but this one certainly helps you realize how to get started!
Love Like God is a book I had to eat and digest in small bites, similar to eating a rich, chocolate cake. It is divided into short essays by authors ranging from recognizable public personalities, actors, and authors, to average Joe’s and Jane’s, with encouraging commentary by the author Caroline Shearer alongside each one. Since the book is a compilation, no two essays are written in the same style, and I liked the authors who wrote in very real, relatable, insightful language the best. A couple of the writers bordered on too sappy, but the shining stars of the book, like Dr. Judy Kuriansky writing about how she learned to love unconditionally from her mother’s positive affirmations, Dr. Matthew B. James writing about the power of positive language, and Vida Ghaffari recapping a difficult childhood growing up “different” but learning to love both herself and the kids who had made it a struggle to feel accepted, made the book a joy to read. Some of the essays, like those by Jon Graves and Chase Block about loss, made me cry, but still had an uplifting message about not letting pain be a defeating force in your life. Read each essay individually, gloss over any one you don’t like, but savor the ones you do, (and there will be many), because the ones that stand out will really make you rethink what it means to love someone selflessly, even in the smallest ways, like not being crabby to your husband when you’re feeling irritable, or being kind to those who are not always kind to you. This is a perfect book for helping reframe our perspective to one of love and joy; a reminder that can’t be recalled enough.
Love like God is nothing short of amazing. Filled with inspiring, true stories of people from all walks of life. This book will teach you to love in ways that maybe you never thought that you could. There is not another book like this one, heartwarming and thoughtful, I would highly recommend it to all and think that it would make a wonderful gift.
"Love Like God" is the perfect book for anyone struggling with the meaning of "unconditional love" or "absolute love". The many stories in the book show that "absolute love" can be found in many different situations and is different for everyone. All of the stories give inspiration and share a life lesson learned about "absolute love". Having read the book, I feel that I am more in tune with my concept of "absolute love" and how I can give it openly to everyone I meet. What an amazing read!
This compilation redefines love - and what it means to love - in an endearing and heartfelt way. Like all compilations, some of the stories within these pages resonated with me more than others, but all had something to offer and each one changed my perspective on life and love in some way. This is a worthwhile read, particularly so close to Valentine's Day. It will open your heart, your mind, and help you love yourself and others in ways you perhaps hadn't known before.
