CHAPTER 1

Aries

Ruled by Mars, that fiery God of War, your birthsign coincides with the very first day of Spring, and your attitude to life invariably tends to be 'me first' or 'I want it yesterday'. You might think that this attitude is perfectly acceptable, and that it's managed to get you where you are now, but are you really convinced that it's always been for the best?

You're a real go-getter; one of the most enthusiastic and enterprising signs in the entire Zodiac. A born survivor, you're someone who thrives on challenges, loves life, and possesses a natural exuberance which makes you one of the friendliest souls around. Full of energy, you throw yourself headlong into everything you undertake – headlong into relationships too.

Impatient, impulsive Aries. There is something wonderfully innocent and vulnerable about you. Somehow you manage to remain eternally youthful. At heart you'll always be the child who never wanted to grow up. But, unless children learn that they can't always have things all their own way early on, life can be tricky as the years go by.

Sometimes you can appear aggressive and even arrogant when people meet you for the very first time. Astrologically, Aries rules the head, so I suppose you could be forgiven for perhaps being slightly too concerned with your ego. However, why should anyone else be aware of that, unless they're a keen student of astrology and have instantly realized that you're far more timid than you appear?

Just because Aries is the first sign of the Zodiac, and because you are endowed with natural qualities of leadership, that doesn't mean you can always take the lead. Even if your friends let you boss them around when you were all seven or eight years old, it didn't mean that once you reached adolescence and adulthood your experiences would be the same.

But you have to be very honest with yourself when reading this chapter, for it might be far too easy to sit back and tell yourself that you've never been bossy or aggressive in your life. You may say you've simply been enterprising and assertive, and that you have only initiated things because nobody else was prepared to make the first move, and that deep down you've always waited for someone else to take control. And subconsciously that might well be true. The trouble is that there isn't always the time to scratch below the surface and find out what makes someone tick. And if you want to achieve the perfect relationships in your life, then you need to clock up more obviously positive characteristics than negative ones.

One of the most important things to work on in your personality is inevitably the need to exercise a little more patience. You invariably try to do everything too quickly. To maintain perfect relationships in your life you do need to take things a touch slower.

Besides, you know how much you thrive on challenges. If something doesn't run as smoothly as you would like, think how proud you will feel when it starts to improve because of your positive attitude and determined efforts.

When it comes to love, you must surely accept that you're up against something you can't control. As romantically idealistic as Pisces, and often as self-critical as Virgo, even the toughest Arien will usually admit that while you enjoy being independent and renowned for your qualities of leadership, deep down you do thrive in a blissfully happy emotional relationship, with someone who understands the real you.

But what do you do so often? Your headstrong, impulsive ways send you falling head-over-heels in love with the most impossible partner, and not only when you could perhaps excuse yourself for being too young to know any better. Your knees turn to jelly, you dream of living happily ever after, and you're determined to prove that you're irresistible. You don't necessarily wait to ascertain whether this dream partner is interested in you or not, let alone whether he or she has the strength of character you need. You're quite prepared to make the first move and take it from there.

The snag is that sometimes you rush so quickly into something that before very long you realize you've made a mistake. To have and to hold the perfect relationship in your life, you have to learn to take things a touch slower. But as a typical challenge-loving Aries, your heart bursts into flames when you fall in love.

You're passionately emotional, and a lover who doesn't satisfy your sexual desires will not be your perfect partner for very long. But equally a physically gratifying relationship which doesn't give you very much satisfaction outside the bedroom will be just as short-lived. A totally fulfilling involvement must combine romance, good sex, and mutual interests.

Your Mars-ruled personality gives the impression that you want to control situations from the word go. But it's not that you're totally selfish, and expect the rest of the world to revolve around you. Although you possess a large ego, you're also one of the most loving and generous signs of the entire Zodiac. You're amazingly adept at attracting admirers to your side, and it's simply a matter of allowing them to take things at their pace instead of yours.

Anyone who has ever been emotionally involved with an Aries of either sex will also soon realize that you can be as jealous and possessive as any Scorpio. You tend to have blind faith in anyone you love, so it always comes as a great shock if you realize it has been misplaced. And while you thrive on challenges, your fiery passion will burn itself out in bitterness and frustration if you feel you're being two-timed; so coping with a 'triangle' situation is never your forte.

It's not just in emotional relationships that your impatience and urge to control can create problems for you. You're quite capable of behaving like a spoilt child if you don't get your own way with your family or friends. And heaven help a boss or colleague you don't respect who is responsible for telling you what to do. It's always difficult for a headstrong Arien to be given orders by anyone they can't relate to.

But don't get me wrong: you're never usually a snob. You can happily relate to anyone you're involved with in any way, just as long as you do respect them, and age differences never bother you.

However, while everyone invariably mellows as the years go by, a typical Aries does find it hard to slow down, to be more patient, to accept that there really is a time and a place for everything, and therefore you sometimes give yourself unnecessarily difficult moments.

Why not try to stop wanting things yesterday, to give other people a chance to be leaders and enjoy the freedom which you like to have yourself? You have so much energy and vitality to give to the world, so don't burn yourself out by missing it.

This is also a good moment to tell you that inside every star-sign is a part of their opposite sign trying to get out! And that is absolutely perfect for you, since your opposite sign in the Zodiac is Libra – the sign of balance, peace and harmony. Think about those Libran scales when you feel yourself doing your leadership act a little too much. Visualize them in your mind – the power of your mind is incredibly strong, so use it. Next time you feel the urge to tell someone what to do, count silently to ten and think it over again. Were you about to order them around unnecessarily? Were you being selfish, putting your own needs before anyone else's? Were you creating an unnecessary challenge for yourself?

You don't have to turn overnight from a fiery Ram into a meek little sheep. But equally you don't have to make quite such a noise and wear everyone else out with your amazing energy. You can learn to walk instead of run, perhaps even try not wearing a watch when it isn't absolutely necessary. You can learn to be a little less extravagant financially. Many Ariens never seem to have enough money to cope with all their needs, even though they're quite capable of earning it. And it's no use making the excuse that it's part of your astrological make-up to be both extravagant and generous when you know that you also have to overcome any of your negative characteristics – and over-extravagance can be very, very negative.

Because you're a Fire sign you're not always sufficiently practical with your feet on the ground. But you're perfectly capable of modifying this. You're also perfectly capable of becoming less impatient and less involved with your own needs. Of course you enjoy being put on a pedestal and having lots of action and excitement in your life, of having innumerable goals and challenges, of having earth- shatteringly good sex in your love life and of tirelessly proving that being the first sign of the Zodiac is a privileged position.

But since you also value relationships which can become more fulfilling and contented as the days and months go by, and since you're invariably aware that you're far more vulnerable than you appear, why not stop putting on quite such an act. Your refreshing mixture of adventurous enthusiasm tempered with courage and faith, your passion combined with that childlike innocence will mean you will never be alone for long.

It is up to you to control your impatience, to explore your feelings step by step, to learn to take advice as much as you like to delegate responsibility, and to discover as much as you can about your partner's needs and desires so that your relationship can always remain as perfect as the first moment it began.

How you see Aries Think of this relationship rather like looking in a mirror. You'll recognize and understand almost every facet of your partner's personality. Challenging in every sense – you can be perfect soulmates or two strong egos battling for control!
