Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
This captivating little pictorial autobiography for adults, a life told through clothes, features Beckerman's brightly colored drawings of the vestments she wore at different times in her life, accompanied by diarylike entries. She grew up in Manhattan in the 1940s and '50s, and we see her elementary school outfit, ballet costume, prom dress, etc. After her mother died, her grandparents, not wanting her to live with her father, took in Ilene and her sister; she never saw her father again. In 1955, at 20, she married her 37-year-old sociology professor in Boston. They soon divorced, and in her second marriage, which also ended in divorce, she had six children, losing one in infancy. She is now v-p of an advertising agency. Beckerman's extremely reticent text never illuminates these events, but her minimalist self-portrait is a wry commentary on the pressures women constantly face to look good. 40,000 first printing; first serial to the New York Times Magazine. WARNING: Do Not Waste Your Time

What a truly gigantic waste of trees. I cannot believe stuff like this get published. The joke is on anyone who buys this.

    REALLY Expensive!

I enjoyed this book. My rating is based on its cost per page, which is high, considering the very small amount of text. The drawings are nice but don't show much detail. I think that the book is mostly intended for the gift market. A "hard" copy would be suitable, in my opinion, to commemorate a divorce or the birth of a grandchild.

    Did not meet expectations

I read the description and was excited to see a story filled with anecdotes behind certain clothes, but it was written like a dictionary. I wanted more elaboration on the clothes not just I bought it here and wore it here. I did enjoy the pictures and the brief glimpse into the fashion trends of the time, but TOTAL waste of money. Should be $0.99.

Cute little book that brings back memories. Cleverly presented in picture form with brief narration. Definitely a "ladies" book.

    WONDERFUL STORY-GREAT FOR ALL AGES

at the age of 12, i think that this book was WONDERFUL! to me, it related to things in my life. well not the part of her older life, but it was still really good. The story is different from other books i have read(i love to read). It was so origanal, because it tells wat really happened to her. Unlike otherh book, which are mostly fiction. Ilene Beckerman is such a talented and funny author. She is one of my favorites!

Every one of her books are amazing. I've alternated from crying to hysterical laughter with the turn of a page. She is a genius.

    ESSENTIAL FOR FASHION THERAPY!

I never tire of looking through this little book and I've based an entire new field of therapy on it: fashion therapy. Go get a blank sketchbook, a set of thin colorful markers and go down memory lane yourself following Ms Beckerman's lead. Viola--fashion therapy
