Overview

Adding a new rhythm guitarist, Dire Straits expands its sounds and ambitions on the sprawling Love Over Gold. In a sense, the album is their prog rock effort, containing only five songs, including the 14-minute opener "Telegraph Road." Since Mark Knopfler is a skilled, tasteful guitarist, he can sustain interest even throughout the languid stretches, but the long, atmospheric, instrumental passages aren't as effective as the group's tight blues-rock, leaving Love Over Gold only a fitfully engaging listen.

I AM ONLY 13 YEARS OLD AND WHEN I FIRST HEARD 'INDUSTRIAL DESIESE' I THOUGHT IT WAS FANTASTIC! I HAVE ALL OF DIRE STRAITS' ALBUMS AND LISTEN TO THEM OVER AND OVER AGAIN. NOT ONLY IS THE SINGING GOOD ON THESE ALBUMS BUT THE INSTUMENTS ARE EXELLENT AND I AM LEARNING TO PLAY THE GUITAR HAVING BEEN INSPIRED!

This album finds Dire Straits treading new territory with regard to musical direction. Tracks like "Telegraph Road" attempt to paint a large canvas detailing an individual's place in the vast lanscape of life. "Private investigations" lends itself to a dark and forboding atmospheric soiree into the unknown. A delightful album sure to delight any musical fan.
