Barnes & Noble
Spanning more than two decades, this two-disc set collects Collins's signature ballads along with the singer's personal favorites, rarities, and previously unreleased performances. Love Songs… includes such top-charting hits as "One More Night," "Against All Odds," and a live version of "Separate Lives." The 25-song compilation also features renditions of standards by other composers, including his version of the Leonard Bernstein–Stephen Sondheim classic "Somewhere," a cover of Curtis Mayfield's "I've Been Trying," and a live performance of the Temptations' "My Girl." All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Released on Rhino/Atlantic/Face Value Records in the fall of 2004, Love Songs is a good idea. Since Phil Collins is known for his romantic hit ballads, the idea to have all of these hits on one disc is appealing. That's not quite what Love Songs is -- as the subtitle A Compilation...Old and New suggests, it has grander ambitions than that. It spans two discs, adding several new songs, rarities, and live recordings into the mix, sometimes substituting alternate versions for the hit version (as on a live version of "Separate Lives" and a rehearsal take for "True Colors"). The low-key, romantic atmosphere is more or less kept throughout the 25 songs.

    I really loved this idea!

I really like collections and greatest hits albums and I thought this was REALLY good listening. I especially bought it because I happened to catch the video to "Against All Odds" on VH1 Classic channel...I remembered this song on the radio from my childhood in the 1980's and I was intruiged to find out what the movie "Agains All Odds" was about (the video contained many clips to the movie, of course!) And after watching the movie I am so addicted to that song! I like the idea of a whole collection of love songs, it's not for everyone (I know some guys are cringing at the thought of an entire album of love songs), but if you're a fan of Phil and his sound & want just a full collection of only the love songs to listen to...this is great!

    Nice!

Very nice peaceful CD. Phil Collins has an awsome voice and his music is unique. You just feel so happy when you listen to this CD even the sad songs like separate lives....

Some things are better left unrecorded

I picked up this compilation today and after all that hype. I think it was released the same day as the carelessly-conceived Dreamland by Joni Mitchell. First of all, I'm not a fan of Phil Collins' later stuff. I find it too lush and less melodic. There are many songs on this CD that I find relaxing and enjoyable. However, there are some songs that I really do not like: Tearing And Breaking, Groovy Kind of Love (as a matter of fact, my least favorite PC song - sorry, Phil!) and also some of the live tracks. Also, since it became a staple in the 80's and 90's, this collection could have also used some Genesis songs that would have easily matched the mood. So, basically, this compilation is quite unequal. If you want a similar (and better compiled) compilation, listen to Peter Gabriel's Hit (I can't believe it was a flop!). But if you enjoy Phil Collins' schmaltzy side, buy this CD anyway! (P.S. Genial artwork too!)
