Love Songs [Rhino]

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
He may have earned his reputation with cries against societal injustices "The Other Side of Town" and his call for racial solidarity "We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue", but soul singer Curtis Mayfield was an old softy at heart, a fact made plain by this lush collection of his Love Songs. Mayfield came from a gospel background, and his early work with the Impressions, such as this compilation's "Grow Closer Together" and "You Must Believe in Me," revels in this influence with doo-wop-flavored vocals and blaring bass arrangements. By the time Mayfield went solo in 1970, he'd become known for his lilting falsetto and his funky, fat-bottomed production techniques, which at times brought to mind Barry White ...

By the time Mayfield went solo in 1970, he'd become known for his lilting falsetto and his funky, fat-bottomed production techniques, which at times brought to mind Barry White "You're So Good to Me" and at other times recalled Gamble & Huff's sweeping orchestrations "Love to Keep You in My Mind". In a sentimental mood, Mayfield easily switched gears -- whether putting acoustic guitar at the forefront of the cascading "When We're in Love" or slipping the subtle cry of a wah-wah guitar into the quiet storm lament "So You Don't Love Me." Fortunately for listeners unfamiliar with Mayfield's more romantic side, Love Songs is a treat for both the heart and soul. Dave Gil de Rubio
All Music Guide - Andrew Hamilton
Happy-in-love songs mostly from Curtis Mayfield's solo years. Only four selections are from his renown Impressions' years two as a quintet -- "Grow Closer Together" and "I'm The One Who Loves You" -- and two as a trio -- "You Must Believe Me" and "I Love and I Lost". The other 12 are solo deliveries including sweet nothings -- "The Makings of You," "So in Love," the lilting "Show Me Love," "When We're Alone," and "In Love, in Love, in Love" -- that display Mayfield's genius at its heartwarming best.
