Drawn almost entirely from her Argo/Chess recordings of the '60s although there are some cuts from the early '70s, Love Songs is a fine selection of romantic music from one of the greatest blues singers of her generation. There are hits here, highlighted by "At Last," but mood overrules chart position, so these 14 songs wind up setting a seductive atmosphere and maintaining it from beginning to end. It's not essential for collectors, although some songs aren't all that easy to come by elsewhere. Instead, it's an album for casual fans, those who like James' style, especially when it's presented in a romantic setting. For these listeners, it's very worthwhile.

    The First Cut Is the Best

    The impeccable "At Last" (I never tire of it) appears first, but most of the other songs, though less familiar, continue to grow on me. The last few selections are not as pretty. However, fourteen cuts is a fairly generous number. James' renditions of standards like "Again" and "Someone to Watch Over Me" are original and beautiful. The instrumentalists and overall sound quality of the recording are excellent. At times, her voice is out of control (sounds a little raunchy like Janis Joplin's), but not often. This is my first Etta James album, and I do recommend it.

    I Got Chills Listening

    Etta! Etta! Etta James. I have listened to Etta since I was a child and still appreciate her original renditions of these timeless songs. Only one disappointment, the song "I'm Loving You More" is not the original, but Etta still pulls it off and I still loved it! Etta wherever you are, I Love you!!!

    Essential Etta For Every Collection

    Been waiting for a CD like this for year's of Etta's interpretations. Includes her classic hits and other renditions. Etta's artistry of these songs make them truly her own. She is a voice of a lifetime like Dinah Washington.

    Superb!

    If you love slow love songs (blues), this CD is for you. Endlessy romantic and lovely songs and James's unbelievable voice will steal your heart.

    Etta is the best

    This cd of love song has been the best I have ever heard. I use eto listen to Etta when I was a little girl. I;m now 46 and still loving her music. I'm getting married in june and her at last is the song my groom and I will be dancing to.
