Splat, the black cat, returns on Valentine's Day. Along with the cards he has made for everyone in his class, he has crafted a special one for white Kitten. He likes her "more than fish sticks and ice cream." But whenever she sees him she teases him and runs away. He sets out for school, so preoccupied when rounding a corner that he runs right into Kitten. Again she teases and he is puzzled. During recess at school, Spike, a tough cat in a striped jersey, spots the special Valentine addressed to Kitten and insists that he likes her more. He even has a much bigger card for her. Splat groans, sighs, and throws his away. To his surprise, Kitten retrieves it, then gives him one with a poem inside, along with words that echo his and make him smile: "I like you." On the front end page sits Splat on a bench, alone except for a small mouse. The mouse follows Splat around, sometimes on a bicycle, but on the back end page it is just Splat and Kitten. Splat is a bulky, rectangular furry feline with skinny arms and legs and white eyes set close together. The comic illustrations are mainly in shades of black and white, with touches of red for Splat and pink for Kitten. A small black cloud rains on Splat when he is particularly puzzled. In this follow-up to Splat the Cat (HarperCollins, 2008), the fuzzy black feline learns that bigger isn't better when it comes to Valentine's Day cards. Splat has a crush on Kitten, a fluffy white cat with pea-green eyes, but he isn't the only one. Self-assured Spike informs Splat that he likes her much more and has prepared a superior Valentine to prove it. Discouraged, Splat tosses his tribute into the trash. Kitten smiles as she receives Spike's card but doesn't swoon as she reads, "You are so lucky that I like you." Happily, she notices the little red envelope in the trash and surprises Splat with a pink Valentine that leaves him grinning from ear to ear. The cartoon-style illustrations have a contemporary, quirky feel due to the monochromatic palette, which is punctuated with brightly colored details. Splat the cat returns with a Valentine's Day story. Splat takes special care in getting ready for Cat school. He has all his valentines made along with one extra special card in a red envelope for Kitten. Splat likes her more than fish sticks and ice cream. However, Splat feels that Kitten does not feel the same because she pulls his ears, pokes his stomach, ties his tail, and calls him smelly. Seymour, the mouse, has no explanation for Kitten's behavior. On his way to school, Splat literally runs into Kitten who reacts in her usual way of pulling his ears, etc. He is still puzzled about her behavior. At school, the students swap cards but Splat is hesitant to give Kitten the card that he made. Spike finds out that Splat likes Kitten and he challenges Splat as to which of them likes Kitten more. Splat feels outwitted by Spike. Will Kitten feel that Splat is special? In the illustrations, the limited use of color draws attention to Splat and his worried expressions.     I absolutely adore Splat. If you haven't read SPLAT THE CAT, I highly recommend doing so, even though you don't have to do it before enjoying LOVE, SPLAT.

    Splat is determined that today will be perfect. After all, it's Valentine's Day, and he's got a certain someone on his mind - a snowy white cat, with pea green eyes, named Kitten.

    But when he runs into Kitten on the way to school (literally), he's too nervous to give her the card. And even when Valentines are exchanged during class, the funny feeling in his stomach won't let him give Kitten his special greeting. And at recess, when Spike informs Splat that he likes kitten, too (and has a much larger card to prove it), Splat gives up.

    His card goes into the trash.

    But Kitten finds it, and she has a small, pink envelope to give to Splat! And inside are the same three little words that his own card contained: I Like You.

    Splat is just so cute that I want to bring him home! The illustrations and story by Rob Scotton are absolutely perfect! Whenever you pick up a book featuring Splat, you won't be able to resist loving him just a little bit more.

    My Daughter absolutely loves this book!

    I bought this book for my six year old daughter and she just loves the illustrations and the story line. I gave it to her for Valentine's Day and she took it school the next day and insisted on reading it to the class for story time. She said that all of the kids in the class loved the story too. She liked this one so much that I also purchased Russell the Sheep by the same author and she loved that one as well.

    Ah, your first crush! With heart and humor, Splat makes his case for the affections of his first love. But as always in life, there are complications. A wonderful book for toddlers anytime, but especially for Valentine's Day.

    Cute

    My daughter liked this book. Splat is one of her favorite characters and she was happy with the read. Her favorite book is "Splat."

    We love splat.

    Wonderful books for children and adults. I read this to my 3 year old niece. These books really helped increase her attention span with all the brilliant pictures and enticing stories.

    My almost three year old loves this book. It is sweet and interactive. It is so cute. The pictures and words work well together. Very enjoyable!

    Valentine Teacher Gift

    As we were leaving the store, my 3rd grade son spotted the book. He said, "Mom, it's Splat!" He knew right then and there that he wanted to give the book to his teacher for Valentine's Day, which is exactly what he did. He presented it to her about 2 weeks before Valentine's Day and the class loved it!

    A cute, classic story about a classroom Valentine's Day party. Splat has a secret crush on a girl in his class, but then finds out he has a rival. Who will she choose?

    I read this book to my second grade class for Valentine's Day and they loved the adorable illustrations and giggled at the part when Splat was so nervous on Valentine's morning. It's a sweet, simple story that kids and adults can relate to. Splat is one of my new favorite characters. I definitely plan to buy more Splat books to share with my students!
