All Music Guide - Richie Unterberger
Double-CD box contains most of their classic first three albums including the entirety of Forever Changes, all three non-LP tracks from their 1966-1968 prime, and highlights of the post-Bryan MacLean albums from the late '60s and early '70s. Rhino specializes in Love compilations, among other things. This is essential except for the fact that the Forever Changes album (here in its entirety) was later remastered and released separately in a  much better edition, with a bonus disc and book.  Here the Forever Changes tracks sound flat and hissy, with bizarre background noise. This was true also of the first Forever Changes CD released in the 1980s. Anyway, the tracks from the first two Love albums, Love and Da Capo, appear here in monophonic and they sound GREAT that way. This was a good anthology in its time and it's still the best way to get an overview of a band that changed drastically over a short period of time.  Eventually you'll buy all their albums as separate, remastered CDs and shelve this set  forever.  But it's OK.
