Overview

From the author of the NEW YORK TIMES bestselling Can't Resist series comes a new standalone novel in the USA TODAY bestselling Cactus Creek series.

He's a better fighter. But she has all the weapons.

After his combat injuries retire him from the military career he wasn't ready to give up, battle-scarred Hudson Reyes now spends his new life as a movie industry fight scene and weapons specialist simply doing what he knows best: surviving. Until he meets her. The one woman who makes him want to live again.

Sweet, angel-faced Liana Lin is a scrappy little thing--an antique arms authenticator trained in martial arts who's made a living turning the unthinkable demons of her past into the passions that fuel, and fill, her life.

He can't get her out of his head.

Even though she's everything he's told himself he can't have, Hudson can't help but want her. She's a fiery, unpredictable paradox with hidden wounds as deep as his own, and a wicked roundhouse kick he's gotten mighty acquainted with. If one woman could sneak past the barbed wires he's wrapped around his heart, it'd be Lia.

Now if only they could stop sparring long enough to find out...

Lia was orphaned at a young age, but found deep love with her foster family. She is also an antique weapons expert and phenomenal at martial arts.

Hudson is a wounded warrior who admired Lia from afar at a wedding they both attended. He gets more "intel" on her and runs into her at an antique weapons convention.

There is definite interest on both sides, but Lia has some personal issues. She is a 27 year old widowed virgin and the community, and her brothers, are extremely protective of her. Her husband has been MIA for 8 years and she's looking for some closure. Hudson has struggled to overcome his physical wounds, but still battles his internal wounds.

I loved Love, Chocolate and Beer and am a fan of Ms. Duke. I'm not really into martial arts and MMA fighting, but it didn't distract from my enjoyment of the story. I look forward to more books from Ms. Duke and this series.

I'm a sucker for a sexy man in uniform, but add in sweet, caring and feisty and I'm head over heels.  I fell in love with Hudson instantly.  The way he treats Lia and how he expects nothing more than her friendship is amazing.  Lia is a virgin widow who was orphaned  and has an amazing foster family.  She is a weapons expert and loves to tackle her stress by working up a sweat.

I absolutely loved this book and can't wait for the next in the series.  Violet Duke has done it again!

Violet Duke has once again spun her special kind of magic and delivered an amazing story for her readers. LOVE, TUSSLES, AND TAKEDOWNS is the second full-length book in her Cactus Creek series, but can be read as a stand alone. As I said, Violet' s style of writing always feels a bit magical to me. It's charming, witty, and so very colorful in her descriptions I am completely drawn into the world she builds, in this case, Cactus Creek. The residents of the town itself are quirky, intrusive, close-knit, pretty much without boundaries with each other, yet loving and protective of their own. And hilarious. Did I mention hilarious? The dialogue and banter had me cracking up throughout the book.

Love, Tussles, and Takedowns features, Lia and Hudson, who really do have a lot in common and are perfect together. Both are tough as nails, extremely competitive, and also both broken, trauma survivors. They are both into martial arts and antique weapons, a little anti-social, yet have a cache of loyal friends/family who would do anything for them, because of their huge hearts and giving personalities. Being so alike helps them bond and sneak under the other's skin because they "get" each other, but it also feeds the "they deserve better" facet. For instance, they have some pretty intense sexual attraction going between them and Lia's all for taking that next step, but Hudson holds back because he doesn't feel good enough. Being martial artists, they often "take it to the mat", literally.

Hudson and Lia each go through a lot of growth in this story to get to the end, the HEA end. As they begin to trust the feelings between them, and as their love develops, they also find themselves not so guarded with the other people in their life who love them and have been waiting on the sidelines to show just how much. Lia's brothers were perfect in their roles. I loved how they and Lia were so close they could predict each other's behavior and played off that like a comedy routine.

Violet has taken a story line that could have been a serious downer, and while respecting the issues addressed and giving them the depth they deserved, still filled it with funny, delightful and loving characters that infused just enough humor to make this book a joy to read. 4.5 stars

    Good read!

This series is fun and an easy read. Perfect for that quick summer book. I like that the characters have some depth to them and that you can relate to them as well. Each book in the series is well connected and it is great to see characters pop up again from other books - even other series books of Violet Duke. This one was especially interesting because the woman is quite unconventional in many ways!

My favorite Violet Dukr book so far! I could relate so well to Lia and her relationship with her brothers! Loved reading how many different ways sher brothers kept track of everything she did. Just brought back memories of how my older brother used to torment me and interogate my boyfriends growing up! I also loved how Hudson just went with the flow and lets them do it!

This is the second book in the Cactus Creek series. It is about Liana(Lia) Lin and Hudson Reyes.

I usually gush about the male characters in books but can I just focus on Lia for a minute? She is badass! An antique arms dealer, and a bouncer at a brewpub? I want to be her. LOL! Hudson is a soldier who was wounded in active duty. I loved that Hudson was willing to help find Leo even if it meant that he wouldn't be in Lia's life anymore. Both of them have violence and tragedy to overcome before they can truly open their hearts to each other.

As always Violet makes me feel for these characters. I also laughed several times. The scenes with Lia's brothers are hysterical. Maybe we will get their stories? I would love more on the Spencer brothers! I love Cactus Creek and can't wait for Xoey and Issac's story. I would recommend this book to anyone!

Love, Tussles, and Takedowns is the story of Lia and Hudson. Set in Arizona, author Violet Duke tells the story of two very strong individuals, both confident in their own abilities but carrying baggage from their pasts. Lia is an antique arms expert, bouncer for the local brewpub, a kung fu master with four brothers looking out for her. She is also a virgin widow. Hudson is former military with injured hands, so now consults on weapon and fight scenes in movies. He is a very honorable man trying to find his way in the non-military world. Lia and Hudson first noticed each other at a wedding, and found their way to each other a few weeks later. As Lia and Hudson get to know each other, we see the protectiveness of Lia’s family, and the fun and caring this couple bring to the table.

The author does a great job of bringing secondary characters into this book. The backstories and relationships seem real. I also learned a lot about kung fu. I definitely recommend this book. Violet Duke has never let me down yet!

    No rules it's all right

The moment they see each other again the sparks between Hudson and Lia are undeniable. And that is the way an adult relationship should be - no manipulations, no games (outside of the ring) just shoot from the hip honesty between these two down to the fact that he's not going to be around town for long and she understands that and doesn't cry and stomp her feet. He's an Alpha Male and she's an Alpha Female and the Fire is Flamed.
Add some meddlesome Foster brothers, nosy neighbors in a quirky town (ala Stars Hollow in "The Gilmore Girls") and some "helpful" good friends and the humor foundation is built.
Add some person tragedies in each of the couple's past and let the depth of character and compassion grow.
Violet Duke also knows how to hook you not only into this Romance but she also sets you up for the next Romances to come as well. I have been waiting for Xoey's story since the first book in the series and now I am biting all of my nails waiting for Drew's love story.
I'm counting the days for the next release. I think I'll bide my time checking out some of her other novels.

Ok I am very freaking excited about this book.  So far this has to be my most favorite book of Violet's and definitely one of my top fave books.  There was just something about it.  It was so sweet, loving and tender.  It was hot, emotional and just amazing.  I loved both the characters of Hudson (hello handsome) and adored Lia (man would I love to be her).  Words cannot describe how much I loved this book and all the characters.  Her brothers were a riot, all of them.  I cannot wait for all their stories, but this one was simply perfect.  I think I read most of it with a silly smile on my face.  Said Awwww several times and just felt my heart melt in certain spots.

What an emotional ride! This is a beautifully written book of two damaged souls who find each other. Hudson and Lia are meant to be together... but to reach that point, they had to deal with the demons from both their pasts. I laughed, I gasped and I cried while reading this love story. Kudos to Violet Duke for another job well done!
