"Marriage is not just a word. It's a word embedded in a whole cultural system that we are at once asked to participate in, yet be excluded from enjoying ourselves." Davina Kotulski's book, Love Warriors, delivers a passionate message to the eyes and ears of equality activists. Her writing is engaging and reminds readers that at the heart of fighting for marriage equality is the basic respect and dignity for all humans. Her powerful words elicit a pure emotional response of willful anger and determination. After reading this enlightening testament of love you will feel full of spirit and guidance towards taking action. Kotulski's book is a complete package beginning with crucial information containing a witty and flavorful touch. She directs her readers through the history of marriage equality while skillfully presenting how each action has affected present day human rights. Infused in this section are ways to begin your activist skill set. For instance, she provides you with a concise letter to send to elected officials to support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) federal employees in receiving health care and pension benefits. Before reading this section I had not comprehended what laws may affect myself along with loved ones. Kotulski's real life examples allowed me to feel enriched with integrity in support of all LGBT individuals. This book demonstrates monetary injustices against the LGBT minority population. She presents every shape and size of the community and how devastating situations occurred before our government made small progressive changes. I was astounded by the story of a California elderly man who could not receive his late husband's health benefits after being together for 50 years. This man was nearly homeless before the union recognized the severity of the discrimination and changed the law. These stories captured my utmost attention and made me feel full of knowledge. I was heart-fully invested in the following chapters that informed me of the power behind various influences on the LGBT community. More specifically, I was enthralled by the psychological affects LGBT individuals experience in response to political schemas. I naively did not consider the manipulative tactics that occur during political campaigning and how emotionally damaging this can be. Kotulski's words gracefully flow into resources and instructions on where to go after reading. Unlike most activist books, leaving me with powerful emotions and unclear direction, my emotions were given endless avenues to walk down in support of change for equality. I would recommend this book to any individual who is not only seeking powerful guidance, but also concrete sources of action. At the end of it all I feel proud to be a warrior of love. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
