Overview

Katie is just seven and her father is leaving, going to fight in a faraway war, and no one knows when he will come home again.

With Papa away, Katie and her mother do the best they can. Katie makes friends with Old Mrs. Leitstein downstairs. Mama's best friend Louise comes to visit, and then to stay, because her husband is fighting in the war, too, and Louise is going to have a baby.

One stormy day while Mama is at work, Louise says the baby is coming, and Katie helps her through the blizzard to the hospital. Mrs. Leitstein and Louise and her new baby come to seem almost like family to Katie. Then one day, a telegram man brings Mama an envelope with stars on it, and life will never be the same.

Through Katie's keen and tender eyes, Amy Hest tells an intensely moving story about the changes war brings to one family.

Katie, a Jewish girl living in New York City during World War II, sees many dynamic changes in her world as she ages from seven to ten waiting for her father to return from the war.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
``The war came and my father left in a uniform,'' begins this brief but affecting first-person narrative of the many changes wrought within a girl's family during WW II. Ages 8-12. (Mar.)
Children's Literature
Seven-year-old Katie has just said good bye to her father, only this time it will be for a very long time and for a far away war. Days pass and weeks become months. Katie and her father exchange letters and pictures. Her mother works long hours in the hospital while Katie goes to school and reads stories to the little ones in The Children's Room at the public library. They both share Passover and fond stories with a dear widow, named Mrs. Leitstein, who lives downstairs. In fact, it was a time when many women formed special bonds and took on added responsibility. They were waiting for their men to come home or remembering them in their hearts. When Mama's expecting friend, Louise, moves in, it is Katie who leads the soon-to-be mother to the hospital on foot in the middle of an April blizzard. Baby Rosie makes Katie feel all warm inside. Katie reads her stories and promises Rosie that she'll meet her own Daddy soon. Months turn into birthdays and bonds strengthen, until the worst kind of news is delivered by a man in uniform. Katie's father has died in the war. Through Katie's eyes, we learn the power of love, of special bonds in special times, and of the strength within that allows us to carry on. The writing, while both poetic and sensitive, is written in language appropriate for young readers. Adults will also be deeply touched by this story. 2000 (orig. 1997), Candlewick Press, Ages 8 up, $14.99. Reviewer: Leslie Julian

    a touching story

This small book, set in New York City, NY, is about seven-year old Katie, a Jewish girl, whose father leaves to fight in World War II. During his absence, she copes with missing him by learning to value the friendship of her mother's best friend, Louise, and her baby Rosie, old Mrs. Leitstein from upstairs, and even Louise's brother Sam. All of these help her when she receives some unhappy news and later prepares to become part of a new family. This is a very touching book.

    A Very Sweet Story

Amy Hest has written a very sweet and uplifting story. Even though Katie's father is killed during the war, you can't help feeling that there can be a happy future for her. Ms. Hest does a wonderful development of the main character and readers can't help loving her. I also like the introduction of Louise and baby Rose to the story. It really adds to the story line. Readers will not be disappointed!

    Timeless story

The absence of a military father is as poignant today as it was in 1940's New York. Follow seven year old Katie as she sends her father off to war, only to lose him. Katie is heartened by mother's best friend Louise moving in with them. When Louise's baby is born, Katie learns to redefine family. The emotions in this story are dealt with in a delicate and accurate fashion. The only negative is the fact that Katie's mother's happiness is only rekindled by new love and remarriage. For many widows, that may never happen and unrealistically portrays happiness and recovery.
