Overview

Having spent most of the mid-'90s taking a break from the music industry to start a family and recharge her creative batteries, Sade returned in 2000 with the stellar Lovers Rock. This live document, recorded before an adoring public on her American tour, shows Sade bridging the gap between the Quiet Storm sophistication of her earlier work and the edgier, groove-driven efforts of her younger competition. Backed by longtime collaborators Stuart Matthewman, Andrew Hale, and Paul Spencer Denman (a.k.a. Sweetback), along with a handful of extra musicians, the Nigerian-born, U. K.-bred chanteuse handily communicates the hushed intimacy of her albums to a big and boisterous audience who make their adulation known at every sax solo and (one imagines) hip swivel. Recent fare such as the roots-rock-flavors of the atmospheric "Slave Song" (with its dubby excerpt from the Abyssinians reggae classic "African Race") and the hip-hop-flavored nuance of "Flow" mix effortlessly with the jazzy cool of "Smooth Operator" and the infectious, funky vibe of "The Sweetest Taboo." The impeccable musicianship of Sade's band gives muscular new life to the hypnotic opener, "Cherish the Day," an aggressive "Paradise" (packed with rock-like guitar riffs and popping percussion), and the ambient eroticism of "No Ordinary Love." But it's Sade's innocent vocal gifts that make quiet numbers such as "The Sweetest Gift," a lullaby written for her little girl, and "By Your Side," dedicated to her fans who "kept the flame burning," the real keepers on this set. As the title hints, Lovers Live is an affirmation celebrating the power of love and music to create a soul space amid the occasional ugliness of the real world.

All Music Guide - Brad Kohlenstein
Sade made a strong comeback in 2000 with Lovers Rock, her first album in eight years. She sealed the deal in 2002 with Lovers Live, a collection of performances from her very successful summer tour. It's proof that Sade hasn't lost a note and her fans haven't missed a beat. Above all things, the record is smooth. Sade's new songs mix seamlessly with classics from every stage of her career. An energetic eight-piece band breathes new life to the old tunes and offers another look at the Lovers Rock material. The highlight, of course, is Sade's intoxicating voice and it's clear that the audience is under her spell from her first breath. Lovers Live is a sum greater than any one of its parts, but there are some standout moments, like the rocking version of "Paradise," "The Sweetest Gift" (a song written for her daughter), and a haunting rendition of "Jezebel." Even though the recordings were taking from various performances throughout the tour, the album feels like one cohesive performance and makes for a great listen all the way through.

She is the voice of a summer storm, the most sensual of midnights, cool spring breezes, and fiery copper sunsets. She is the voice of falling in love and getting your heart broken. I have been listening to Sade since I was 13 years old she has served as my definition of what it means to be classy, strong, sensual, dangerous, and most of all, a woman. You must have this CD. You must be able to hear what she does best: Bring a crowd first to their feet, and then to their knees!

Sade is what is right with music today. Her music is is truly ''roots'', it is connected to the very essence of human emotion. The truly sensual comes to life because her music stimulates every fiber. She places this musical magic over commercial acceptance and achives true Diva staus.

The release of Lover's Live has been long awaited by Sade's loyal fans who faithfully followed her in body and spirit during the Lover's Rock 2001 U.S. Tour. This CD is a compilation of songs highlighted on several CDs throughout her career. Each song has the comfortable familiar sound, yet just a bit different instrumentals, voice and back up that tantalizes just right and begs me back for more. The CD begins with my goosebumps well before I hear the familiar sultry voice of Sade in Cherish the Day. I'm immediately brought back to the excitement/electricity in the air and the polar-fleece warmth of the music during the concert. The Slave Song has a beautiful introduction and is a song you can easily get lost in the beat of. By your Side is a CLASSIC. The CD contains 13 tracts, ending with Is It a Crime. All in all, a great CD. The classy music is the ultimate candy for an ear who appreciates music with just the right amount of zip, yet gentle enough to make it the perfect music to play again and again. Sade's music is a gift to our lifetime and a must to experience.

I can not describe the way I felt when I first listened to this record. Just to start, I will say that all the import items brought to my country (Costa Rica) by a record distribuitor were sold in one day !!! And is no surprise, the energy from a live performance combined with the characteristic sensuality of Sade, her band (highly recognized, remember and look for Sweetback, you'll find it very interesting), the crowd, the sound, it all takes you there. This amazing performance that takes you from the glamourous beats of Smooth Operator, through the romantic sounds of By your side, passing through an explosion of rhythm with Paradise, had to be on a record, and it came like the perfect birthday gift to me because it was released one day after I became 30. Believe me, this is a ''must have'' title.

What I like most about this album is that Sade and the band make the songs being performed live sound just like the originals, which is by no means easy to do.They've done it once again.

This is a very passionate artist that I have grown to appreciate. I love music and everything she's does is fantastic. I also recommend Lover's Rock and The Best of Sade. I must also comment on her band. They just prove that behind every great artist is a GREAT BAND, that have been there every step of the way. I love good music but this is just great music.

The voice of a generation and generations to come. It's simply magical. A must have. If you buy one compact disc this year-this is the one. It's the best live album I have ever heard.

Sade came back the way we knew she could do it with this live joint, hitting the listener with a very passionate set of some of her best songs. Imagine being the music director of that gig, trying to decide what are her best songs right? This is defintely one of the best cd's of the year in a time where you, THE listener", has a hard time finding a whole cd worth the money. I say get this cd. Hell, even get two or three and give them as gifts to your lover, parents, or best friends.
