Overview

The painter, Jack Vettriano, emerged from unlikely beginnings as a mining engineer’s apprentice in Fife, Scotland—unknown and untutored—to see his paintings acquired by celebrities around the world. His first solo exhibition sold out—as did his second—and he has since become Scotland’s most successful and most controversial contemporary artist.

Vettriano’s images are a gateway to a world that is both alluring and sinister. He depicts a place where the past and the present intertwine. It is a world with a heavy atmosphere, evoking the great noir movies and novels of our time.

In Lovers and Strangers, Jack Vettriano has chosen 100 of his most powerful canvases. These are accompanied by a compelling essay by the critic, Anthony Quinn, who recounts Vettriano’s early days in the Fife coalfields, his initial artistic endeavors on the backs of betting slips, his first solo exhibition, and his present phenomenal success.

Meet the Author

Jack Vettriano left school at fifteen to become a mining engineer. For his twenty-first birthday, a girlfriend gave him a set of watercolor paints and from then on, he spent much of his spare time teaching himself to paint.

Over the last twenty years, interest in Vettriano’s work has grown consistently and his solo exhibitions have sold out in Edinburg, London, Hong Kong, and New York. In 2004, his best known painting, The Singing Butler, was sold for over one million dollars, and he was awarded an OBE for Services to the Visual Arts.

In 2008, Vettriano was commissioned to paint a portrait of Zara Phillips as part of a charity fundraising project for Sport Relief; the experience was captured in a documentary broadcast on BBC I. Vettriano currently divides his time between his homes in Fife, London, and Nice.

I have been a fan of Jack's for many-many years and have not been able to find anything in print. Letters to the print publisher go unanswered. This is like a little gold mine, although it is only one shade of gold -- but a shade I didn't even know existed. The book is definiely a keeper, but I want more; more variety. A larger format in some future editions would be nice.
