After waiting sooo long for her to follow her last recording,
this was way too much of the same. Where is the originality
of a "smooth operator". She has a brand new one out now. I
hope this has some new tunes and not rehashed older ones.
For guys like me, who would be more likely to be listening to the latest releases from Mastodon than from Maria Carey, I recommend this albvum wholeheartedly. An almost universally loved album (actually, I don't know anyone who wouldn't like this), Sade' s sophisticated jazz stylings gets upgraded with an upbeat r&b/hip-hop groove so masterfully it's admirable. From classic ballads like By Your Side and the title track, to the heartwrenchings songs of slavery and racism, Sade just hits the right notes every time. This album's almost a decade old, actually, but she just does such a perfcet job updating her sound, it seems, that there's been no need for new material since (her only new releases since then being her live album and a single to benefit victims of Darfur.) Considering how little music's actually changed this decade, this still sounds quite great.

This is one of my favorite albums of all. Moreover, because of the depth of feeling contained within this music and lyrics, it is sometimes difficult for me to listen to. I sat for a time trying to find tears which never came with regard to some of the subject matter held in the lyrics.
This record represents a very special period in my life for me, which renders Lover's Rock nearly painful in the welling up of certain realizations which Sade Adu never fails to illustrate so well.

Sade creates impeccable pop music ("if ya want another example, think Abbey Road"). This album is note perfect in it's "less is more" vibe...I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys great songs, well crafted arrangements and a sultry pop vibe. You won't regret it.

Sade returns from her hiatus with even more talent. This CD is ultra-mellow and romantic. It's great for some easy dancing with a loved one. Lover's Rock has led to multiple wonderful nights for me.

This is Sade's first original recording in 8 years and it's fantastic! Here Sade exudes a very stripped down but soulful sound. The album consists mainly of ballads that are accompanied by a drum machine, several guitars and the occasional keyboard. Some of the highlights on this album are ''By Your Side'', ''Lovers Rock'', ''All About Our Love'', and ''Somebody Already Broke My Heart''. The lyrics are very insightful and reflective, which helps give listeners a feeling of understanding, as most of the songs are about the triumphs and travails of love. Overall, this is a very strong release from a mature artist. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This album was heard by my boyfriend and I when we were making love and it was so comforting that it made me think about it and want to buy one for myself. I love the way Sade makes her voice hypnotize you into the songs. You can listen to her any time and all day long.

Her smooth music and her smooth voice will never change. Her music is fullfilling, touching and sophisicated. She sing with integrity and feeling. Even after an 8 year hiatus, Lovers Rock is amazing. Sade is still the greatest. The is no one the can or will replace her. There will never be another Sade.

Personally this is the best ever album from sade even thought her previous albums were brilliant as well. She epitomise a true meaning and definition of a diva. I truely believe this must be part of every R&B lover's collection. Your collection isn't complete without this album.

Pretty good tunes and good singing by Sade, but the band sounded very bland. No horn or guitar solos. In places where an instrument could've been kicking, they just killed time with aimless keyboard noodling. Not much to listen to here. Maybe Sade's heart isn't in the music anymore.

Love Sade's smooth and enchanting voice. She instanting hiptozises you with her mellowness. Great album to dim the lights and forget about everything! This is definately one of their best, and a must have for the fan of contemporary music!

I was completely disappointed with this heap/pseudo-reggae/mindless politicizing failure! It took her 8 yrs. just to come up and out with this ?!? Maybe she needs another 10 years to get inspired! O.K., I must admit. Maybe one or two songs were alright, but it's not something I will play...often. Matthewman, Denman, and Hale were artistically bound on this one! I think they need to re-convene and continue with ''Sweetback''!! Now that was something!!!

I purchased everything Sade ever recorded and love her music. However, after approximately 8 years of silence, I expected a little more. I found ''Lovers Rock'' a little weak, lacking the typical energy and rhythm which made her famous overnight. Except for the first cut, ''By your side'', everything else repeats itself in monotony. The sexual ambiance of her previous recordings has vanished. She sounds fatigued, almost uninterested.

Sade's new release ''Lovers Rock'' goes down like a smooth drink, totally mellow, fine and aged. She has matured and so have her lyrics. The sound is still distinctly Sade with Sweetback, (Hale, Matthewman and Denman) but her lyrics seem to be deeper, more thoughtful, possible even thought provoking. Her lyrics, poetic and always speaking of love, pain or the depths of the human spirit continue on in ''Lovers Rock''. King of Sorrow is a fine example. Not just a song about sadness, but a song about searching the depths of ones soul. I have always loved the lady and her back up band and this one is worth the 7 year wait. Her tunes, though catchy have never been overly complicated. However, the stylization of her sexy vocals are quite complex and yet, the subtlety of that complexity is what makes her the queen of jazz vocalists. Hale, Matthewman and Denman are masters at adding more subtlety to her mellow tunes interjecting texture and depth to her music. Sade Adu has has turned into an excellent producer as well as singer / song writer. Be careful! This CD didn't blow be away when I first heard it, but it has grown on me each and every time it spins. In my experience, those are the CD's that in the end are my time honored favorites.
