Overview

On a bitter December day in 1785, Silas Ballantyne arrives at the door of master blacksmith Liege Lee in York, Pennsylvania. Just months from becoming a master blacksmith himself, Silas is determined to finish his apprenticeship and move west. But Liege soon discovers that Silas is a prodigious worker and craftsman and endeavors to keep him in York. Silas becomes interested in both of Liege's daughters, the gentle and faith-filled Eden and the clever and high-spirited Elspeth. When he chooses one, will the other's jealousy destroy their love?

In this sweeping family saga set in western Pennsylvania, one man's choices in love and work, in friends and enemies, set the stage for generations to come. Love's Reckoning is the first entry in The Ballantyne Legacy, a rich, multi-layered historical quartet from talented writer Laura Frantz, beginning in the late 1700s and following the Ballantyne family through the end of the Civil War.

This book is a great length at 360 pages and is very well edited. It starts out great, then slows down roundt page 160. About 200 it turns into the same old hysterical romance with a rape, arguments and the star crossed lovers going their own way. The conclusion is open ended as this is the first book in a series and the author wants to make sure the reafer pays $7.99 plus tax for book two. I think this is exhorbiant for an ebook and will skip it. This is a Christian book and there is quite a bit of Bible verses, prayers and church. There is also unwed srx, a resultant pregnancy. The death of a child a bully of an older sister and father. This book kept me up until 5:30 AM and I felt like throwing my nook across the room when I discovered it was a cliff hanger. There are some surprizes in the storyline. If it had a conclusion instead of the author wanting to get into my purse, I would have given it a four or five, depending on how well it ended. For ages 18 and up. Chick lit. It was well writen, there is an excetpt at the end, for book 2. AD

Laura Frantz never writes books that are completely predictable, and Love's Reckoning is no exception. I couldn't put the book down once I started. She is definitely one of the best authors of Christian fiction right now.

This first story of the Ballantyne Legacy Series is wonderfully written. It is full of mystery, adventure, family relationships, and love. The story is exciting and drama-filled right to the end. I highly recommend it.

Silas Ballantyne is looking to complete his final year of apprenticeship in York County, Pennsylvania before traveling Westward to open up his own ironworks and blacksmith shop. However, his master blacksmith has other ideas, mainly to marry his eldest daughter Elspeth. However, it is not the elder sister Elspeth that catches Silas' eye...it is the younger, dutiful, unassuming, kind-hearted Eden. Against his better judgement and his plans to move West, Silas finds himself ever-drawn to the quiet Eden. This affection does not sit well with either his master blacksmith or his eldest daughter and both will stop at nothing to see Silas wed to the daughter of their choice...not his.

When I first started reading it I honestly didn't think I would like it but as I pressed on I was so glad I didn't give up on it the first chapter or two. This is a very good book. It is a cliff hanger! I'm looking forward to the next one in the series. This book leaves you wanting more. TR

What an amazing novel! A word of warning before you pick up this book…there will come a time as you are reading this story that you will be unable to put it down. You will find yourself completely unable to part yourself from the happenings of Eden Lee and Silas Ballantyne. Or, should I say, this is what happened to me. The story gripped me right from the start and at a little more than halfway through the book, I simply couldn’t put it down and devoured the rest of the story in one sitting! Laura Frantz has crafted a beautiful love story that is full of glorious highs and heart wrenching lows. I set the book down at the end and felt as if I had lived another’s lifetime. I was truly, emotionally exhausted! But, at the same time, I am now invigorated and craving the next story in The Ballantyne Legacy, Love’s Awakening (especially with the teaser chapter at the end of this book). The characters in Love’s Reckoning are so well done. I truly loved Eden and Silas and thoroughly despised Elspeth and Liege. A beautifully written story that I recommend to those who love historical romance.

This book is the first in a series of the Ballantyne Legacy. The story is mostly set in Pennsylvania and the way the author describes every detail of what a woman had to do every day to keep a house running, or the workings of what is expected of an apprentice, a blacksmith apprentice to be exact, is so real you can feel like you are right there working beside them. In fact, the apprentice is expected to marry the owner’s daughter, and he has two. Which one shall it be? Eden is a young girl with a very soft heart. She hurts no one and feels everyone’s pain. Eden has a dream that she has only shared with some close friends who live nearby in a place with lots of money. Silas is an apprentice, with not much time left on his contract. Silas has a dream also and is working very hard to make it a reality. Silas is a man of faith, you can see it lived out every day of his life. Eden can see it and can’t help but wonder is this something that she wants. Eden’s father has always banned his family from attending church. You know there’s a story behind that? I love this story from the first page to the last. It captured my attention so much I read it through in two days, couldn’t put it down. The love and the hurts became a part of me as I read, I could feel each characters feelings of hurt, pain, abandonment, longing, and joy. I can’t wait to read the second book now. I would recommend this to ones who like historical fiction, love and romance, secrets and longings, and joy.
