This is book #5 in the "Love Comes Softly" series. I began reading the first one, Love Comes Softly, when we got the video based upon it, and have tried to do so with each succeeding video (Love's Enduring Promise, Love's Long Journey, and Love's Abiding Joy). To begin, let me tell you my view of the videos. The first one pretty well followed the book. The second one was something like the book but not as much. The third one was only slightly like the book. And the fourth one was barely like the book. All the videos are good family viewing, but they are getting farther and farther away from the actual stories that Janette Oke wrote. I set aside book #5 to read in preparation for the fifth video, but when we saw what the video was about, it was so far removed from the plot of the book that we have not even seen it. But I went ahead and read the book since it was on my pile. While the books would be considered "romance," I (a guy) like them because they are historical fiction, they portray a loving family, and they show people dealing with the heartaches and difficulties of life based on their faith in God. In Love's Unending Legacy, Clark and Marty return home from visiting Missy and Willie out west and are faced with the problems of Clark's learning to do his work minus a leg, Luke's leaving to study medicine, Arnie's getting married, Nandry's bitterness brought on by Clark's accident, Clare and Kate's losing a baby, Ellie's tempestuous romance with Lane Howard, and Marty's own surprise. Of course, there are some denominational concepts and practices mentioned with which those of us in churches of Christ would not agree, but in general the books are wholesome, with no bad language or anything indecent, and the last chapter of Love's Unending Legacy contains some really good food for thought. After I posted my thoughts about this book on a homeschooling e-mail list, I received two responses. Amy: "I love these stories, as well as all of the books written by Janette Oke. Like you, I find the movies wholesome entertainment, but frustrating when compared to the books. The books are full of normal life challenges, and godly ways to overcome them. My favorite genre of reading is inspirational fiction. The reason is stated in the above paragraph, because it applies to most of them. I do not want anything to do with the 'Left Behind' series, however." Martha: "These movies are such a pet peeve of mine. I just cannot watch them. I even went so far as to write to the publisher and ask how they could have allowed Mrs. Oke's books to be butchered so much. Surprisingly they said that Mrs. Oke was in full cooperation and that she was pleased with Mr Landon's portrayal. They cited the usual reasons why a book turned movie is changed (name similarities, lack of time...etc.). I contacted them after the second movie when they had Missy's little girl to die...that was it for me I couldn't take it anymore....Guess I am a purist when it comes to the books I like."
