Espeland and Verdick have written a book that will motivate the unmotivated learner and help the achieving student to become even more motivated. The suggested assets each student should have are written in simple, down-to-earth ways that most students will understand and be able to incorporate into their daily lives. Several stories of students are sprinkled throughout the book to hold the readers' interest. Some chapters appear repetitive, however information is presented in ways that reluctant readers may need in order to accomplish the suggestions. At the end of the book is A Note to Grown-ups. The authors stress the value of supportive parents and a caring neighborhood that values youngsters. Seven other books in the Adding Assets Series for Kids empower eight to twelve year olds to build developmental assets, You will find good advice to adults, school personnel, and the neighborhood. These will provide opportunities for helping students realize their full potential. Students who need help in comprehension will benefit from a reading teacher or counselor using this book in small discussion groups or on an individual basis. Reviewer: Jennie DeGenaro
