    hard to follow

I found this book very frustrating. I am a law student, so I know I not incapable of processing complicated material. Here, however, I think the author has tried so hard to avoid being too technical that he has avoided being technical at all - and it's tax law, after all! The writing style was what I can only describe as 'jumpy.' There were many instances where I did not understand to what he was referring (for example, he has this calculation in Chapter Four that had me stumped for thirty minutes, and then the actual explanation of that part of the equation showed up in Chapter Six), and many, many areas where I wanted more detailed information. For example, the information early on about hiring a spouse for purposes of establishing a medical plan does not explain whether married partners in an LLC may consider each other employees for this purpose (again, he throws very general concepts out there, all chatty and happy about it, but with NO details to help you apply it to your own situation). The 'chatty and easy' tone just didn't tell me enough for me to be able to figure out how to put any of this to use - he just throws concept out there and kind of glosses over the details. Yes, his stuff is useable, but only to the extent that when you go out and get an accountant or any attorney, you will know what to ask them for. This is not, however, any sort of do-it-yourself guide, which is what I wanted. Also, the title says it's for small business people, but, as the owner of a very small home-based business, I still find the author's advice, like so much tax advice, really applies only to the rich. This is because tax breaks are written by and for the rich. I think this author must not work very much with the rest of us - after you've fully depreciated your business-used vehicle, he says, transfer it into A TRUST in your child's name and then MAKE LEASE PAYMENTS TO YOUR CHILD'S TRUST! OH PUL-EEZE! Whatever it costs to set up a trust, I don't have it, and neither do other small business owners. And take a PAID-FOR vehicle, one that you now own outright, and begin making lease payments on it to your own child? Maybe the author doesn't get this, but REAL working people can NOT SPEND MONEY in order to CREATE TAX SHELTERS...BECAUSE WE DO NOT HAVE MONEY!!! Got it???
