Loyalty and Betrayal [Explicit Lyrics]

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
Gangsta rapper E-40 has earned respect in the San Francisco Bay Area underground for his slang-tastic brand of rhyming. The Battlecat-produced single "Nah Nah...," featuring the melodic G-funk crooning of Nate Dogg, has already blown up on urban radio stations across the country. Further assistance comes from longtime friend Ice Cube, who takes E-40-biters to task with the declaration "I'm sick of motherf**kers biting 40 lingo" on the hard-knockin' track "Behind Gates," and playa president Too $hort, who bounces on the bass-heavy "Doin' a Fool" with UGK. Representing the Dirty South, Big Boi of OutKast brings his funkdafied flavor to the haunting "Ham Samiches and Coup Devilles," while E-40 keeps it "hard like penitentiary, not soft like Nerf" on "Clown Wit It," which features a gritty hook courtesy of the irrepressible Mystikal. With a host of blazin' guest spots to complement his frenzied rhymes, E-40 has delivered the perfect soundtrack for the Caddies and the Jeeps. Ryan Crosby
All Music Guide - Jason Birchmeier
One of E-40's spottier efforts, Loyalty and Betrayal boasts a good number of highlights, along with some tracks that simply don't work well, and practically every track features a guest. The highlights include the Eightball and Jazze Pha collaboration, "Ya Blind"; the Nate Dogg and Battlecat collaboration, "Nah, Nah..."; and the Click collaboration, "Pop Ya Collar." Clearly not afraid to experiment with different styles and collaborators, E-40 is at his most unpredictable on Loyalty and Betrayal. It doesn't make for one of his better albums, though it does make for an interesting one, so long as you don't mind skipping past the duds to find the highlights.
