All Music Guide - Tim Sendra
Landon Pigg looks about 16 on the cover of his debut LP. He's really older (23) but his music sounds informed by teenage passion and concerns as well as being built for teens who might be interested in the heavy, introspective sounds of Coldplay or Keane but would rather have it delivered by a dude who looks like Ashton Kutcher's little bro. OK, that may be a bit harsh. True, though. Pigg spends most of LP spilling his guts wittily about love lost and love found, feeling detached and weird, being confused, and how people can be a real drag. He does it in a perfectly pleasant voice, intimate and passionate, while being backed and produced by pros who know how to make ...

OK, that may be a bit harsh. True, though. Pigg spends most of LP spilling his guts wittily about love lost and love found, feeling detached and weird, being confused, and how people can be a real drag. He does it in a perfectly pleasant voice, intimate and passionate, while being backed and produced by pros who know how to make mainstream teen rock records (most notably Avril producer Clif Magness). They layer big chunks of rock guitar over sweeping keyboards and big loud drums (manned by heavy-hitters Joey Waronker and Matt Chamberlain, among others) and come up with a completely average sound -- which is a drag because Pigg probably deserved a bit better. Certainly his songs would have been better served by more dynamic and original production (and someone to tell him to cut back on the use of the little falsetto leap he runs into the ground quite quickly). That said, there are some standout tracks that hook on despite the sonic limitations, good pop
ock tunes like "Eggshells," "Trickery," the lovely "Perfectionist," and "Magnetism." Almost as importantly, there are no duds to be found. In short, Pigg has talent, LP is a good record with good songs, and above all, the kid shows promise. Given a little luck and some good choices, he could really do something cool someday. Consider this a foot in the door, a nice little calling card that can be reissued in a deluxe package ten years down the road.

    I Also Recommend:

LP is great, but the EP is better

Landon Pigg has great lyrics, a great voice, and a overall fantastic sound. The LP has all but one song off "Coffee Shop" and they are all recorded with a full band. They sound great, but if you are looking for a more mellow album, "Coffee Shop" is the better choice. LP has similar musicality and sound to Gavin DeGraw's first album.

    No, He's Not Ashton's Brother

I found an advance of Landon Pigg's CD and thought, Boy, this guy looks a LOT like Ashton Kutcher. Is it Ashton Kutcher trying to branch out into music under a pseudonym? Is this CD going to be corny? The answer is "no". He's not Ashton Kutcher. He's not even Ashton Kutcher's brother. He happens to be a very talented new artist who looks a lot like him. Landon's got a mellow sound, and the very first track--Can't Let Go--had me hooked. And that's how I feel about this CD. Can't let it go, can't stop listening to it, can't tell you how much I like it or even really why. It kind of defies explanation. If you just give it a chance, I think you'll enjoy it. If you know the artists who influenced him, you'll hear them in his music. (I can hear the Beatles influence). What's great about Landon's songs is that they actually say something. The lyrics are poetic in the sense that you can understand what they mean even though it isn't spelled out for you. A case in point is Eggshells, about being stuck in between good and bad in a state of meaningless limbo and wanting to get out of it. My favorites so far are Can't Let Go.... wait, I just decided that if I try listing my favorites, I'll end up listing almost all of the songs. So get this CD. With all the "created artists" (to quote Lionel Richie) out there, it's nice to find someone new who deserves the spotlight. It's up to us to put him there and I, for one, hope he makes it.
