Luaka Bop 10th Anniversary: Zero Accidents on the Job

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Mark Schwartz
This double-disc, 26-track compilation handily demonstrates what fans of David Byrne's hardy little record label have known for years: Luaka Bop was never merely "world music." In the ten years since its first hit Brazilian compilation, BELEZA TROPICAL, the label has established a pop aesthetic -- call it quirky, contrarian, or simply prescient -- that cuts across boundaries of culture, language, and genre. Divided into "steamy hits" and "slow jams" the kind of verbiage you might expect from an urban mix tape, ZERO ACCIDENTS celebrates the notion that one man's world music is just another's local pop. After all, isn't the Tom Waits-style gothic cowpoke Jim White "Book ...

After all, isn't the Tom Waits-style gothic cowpoke Jim White "Book of Angels" as exotic to a Belgian hip-hopper as the funky Afropean attitude of Zap Mama "Rafiki" is to a South Florida trailer punk? And in our increasingly globalized world, is there any reason to doubt that the same trailer punk hasn't heard the Fatboy Slim remix of "Brimful of Asha," by Anglo-Indian indie rockers Cornershop? Or to think that a hip London kebab hut wouldn't play "Sexy," the insouciant acid-jazz thump from Venezuela's Los Amigos Invisibles? Couple these radical assumptions with some of the remarkable firsts captured here: Luaka Bop was marketing Cuban dance music back in the Reagan administration; the label paired Ry Cooder with Okinawan axeman Shoukichi Kina; got a Brazilian - Jorge Ben - on MTV; unveiled Cesaria Evora in the U.S.; and more or less discovered the Afro-Peruvian music of Susana Baca. Accidents or not, these funky and fun transmissions prove that Byrne and company have always had a commitment to great music, no matter from where in the world it happens to hail.
All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Luaka Bop 10th Anniversary: Zero Accidents on the Job celebrates a decade of releases from David Byrne's innovative global music label. The album features Byrne's own "God's Child," and includes songs from world music luminaries like Irakere, Paulo Braganca, Vijaya Anand, Lenine, and Amigos Invisibles. Geggy Tah's "Whoever You Are" and Jim White's "Book of Angels" reflect the label's modern rock leanings, along with Fatboy Slim's remix of Cornershop's "Brimful of Asha" and Clinton's "People Power in the Disco Hour." Cesaria Evora's "Sodade" and Zap Mama's "Rafiki" highlight the beautiful, diverse vocal styles of Africa, while Tom Ze's "Um Oh E Um Ah!" and Os Mutantes' "Baby" reflect Tropicalia's resurgent popularity. Tracks from King Chango, Susana Baca, Jorge Ben, and many others round out this extensive, affectionate look at Luaka Bop's impressive roster.
