Being that I love Max Lucado's words...it comes as no surprise that I throughly enjoyed this reading. It is one that I will keep near the front of the book shelf for quick reference and continued study. I loved the life lessons because it really made me fell that I could relate on a more personal level rather than viewing it as a surreal experience.

A terrific addition to our family!

It's a bit difficult to review a Bible. It's just one of those things that is always a personal preference. As soon as I saw this one, though, I knew my son would love it. There are a number of reasons for that. First, We are a KJV family. This version is the NKJV it's much easier to understand especially for the kids. Second, the version I got is a hardback - they seem to work best in our family. Third, it's just so easy.

I think the easiest way to explain is this:
    Judges 14:1-10 (page 329)
1 Now Samson went down to Timnah, and saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines. 2 So he went up and told his father and mother, saying, "I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines; now therefore, get her for me as a wife."
3 Then his father and mother said to him, "Is there no woman among the daughters of your brethren, or among all my people, that you must go and get a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?"
And Samson said to his father, "Get her for me, for she pleases me well."
4 But his father and mother did not know that it was of the LORD-that He was seeking an occasion to move against the Philistines. For at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel.
5 So Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother, and came to the vineyards of Timnah.
Now to his surprise, a young lion came roaring against him. 6 And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion apart as one would have torn apart a young goat, though he had nothing in his hand. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done.
7 Then he went down and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well. 8 After some time, when he returned to get her, he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion. And behold, a swarm of bees and honey were in the carcass of the lion. 9 He took some of it in his hands and went along, eating. When he came to his father and mother, he gave some to them, and they also ate. But he did not tell them that he had taken the honey out of the carcass of the lion.
10 So his father went down to the woman. And Samson gave a feast there, for young men used to do so. 11 And it happened, when they saw him, that they brought thirty companions to be with him.

Do you see how it's in paragraph style? It's written more like today's language. It's much easier to read and to understand.
To top it off - this is in the margin: (FYI - this is incomplete... I can only type so much!)
    Life Lessons:
    Judges 14:1-20
Situation: The Philistines ruled over Israel. The Israelites cried to God to save them. God provided a leader called Samson.
Observation: God always provides strength to do His will. In Samson's case, God supplied extraordinary physical power.
Inspiration: Small deeds can change the world. Sow the mustard seed. Bury the leaven lump. Make the call. Write the check. Organize the committee. Years from now someone might follow your example...
    Moses had a staff.
    David had a sling.
    Samson had a jawbone.
    Rahab had a string.
    Mary had some ointment.
    Aaron had a rod.
    Dorcas had a needle.
    All were used by God.
    What do you have?
God inhabits the tiny deed. He cures the common life by giving no common life, by offering no common gifts... Don't discount the smallness of your deeds. (From Cure for the Common Life by Max Lucado)

Now, I ask - what Bible could be better for my 13 year old son? It seems geared right at him!

    Absolutely the BEST!

I sampled several of the other Nook bibles and I have to say this one has it all. It is very complete for a study bible and organized in a simple, accessable manner. s

By Far the best study Bible

I have several study bibles from KJV to NIV to Catholic Bibles. This is by far one of the best! Its pricey for a nook book however there is a lot of usefull content and it is not overwhelming - My only wish - for a Catholic like myself it would be perfect if it had the additional 7 books for Catholics.

A great Life Lesson Study Bible-Especially if you are a Max Lucado fan!

I want to start with saying that I love this study Bible! It is packed with a lot in it, but in a way that doesn't seem overwhelming. I particularly enjoyed the Life Lessons that are on almost every page. They give you plenty to think about and I like that they relate to the chapter that I just read. Lots of practical advise and thoughts that have been excerpted from Lucado's books.

As Max Lucado writes in his acknowledgements section of this study Bible, "This version of the NKJV is a library worth of books in one volume." How true. There are over 1,000 Life Lessons in the margin that relate to the section of scripture that you are reading. Full page devotions through out the book include study guide questions. Christ Throughout the Bible sections are scattered throughout and show how the entire Bible is tied together. The New Life in Christ sections are to help lead you to a closer walk with Christ. In the back of the Bible are He Did This Just For You Verses, examples are God made you his own, He comforts you, He gives you confidence, etc. which are followed with a verse. Then comes the Spiritual Growth Verses, such as Commitment, Faith, Forgiveness, and Love. Next are 3o Studies for New Believers. A different topic everyday starting with some 'Have you ever wondered.' questions, then scripture to read relating to it. A few paragraphs of discussion and the some personal application questions, and even a scripture to read for a more in-depth study. The Big Picture, is a 30 day reading plan that will introduce you to key passages from the New Testament and provide an overview. Where to Turn When Index has several scriptures relating to many different life topics such as When you need encouragement, When you need to forgive, and When you feel stressed. In the front of the Bible there is a Two-Year Devotional Reading Plan, broken down into weeks and days to read the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Each book has an Introduction as well as an About this Book with author, date written, key themes, key verse, and contents or major sections.

This book was provided to me from the publisher in exchange for a review. The opinions expressed are my own.

Practical and Insightful - a must!

Always searching for the ideal study Bible for those I love and for myself, I peruse the shelves at the Christian bookstore in my neighborhood or online at the Christian Book Distributors website.

Generally, I prefer a Bible with no sidebars or notes of any kind, as I see them as a distraction to my own study and growth. Perhaps the reason is that I haven't fully grasped the structure and format of the Bible that includes study notes. Recently, Thomas Nelson published The "Lucado Life Lessons Study Bible" in the New King James Version. Its tagline "Inspirational Applications for Living Your Faith" has acted as the hook and lure for me as well as the fact that I am partial to the writing style of Max Lucado. His word pictures, I can relate to because I think like that. It is important for me to know those who minister to me. After years of reading Lucado's works, I am familiar with his teaching, so I have no qualms with his insightful comments in the margins.

Couple the NKJV - a trusted translation of Scripture - with Lucado's reputation for adhering to Scriptural teaching; the result is not disappointing. The sidebars include Life Lessons, including an overview of specific text, an observation about that section, and inspiration - an excerpt from one of Lucado's books. Following this is an application, usually not lengthy but packed with questions to ponder and meat to chew while digesting the text in question. Finally an exploration is presented where other Scriptures are listed for further study. This format is beneficial for those who wish to read through the Bible from beginning to end.

For use as a study or devotional Bible, a devotional index is provided at the front as well as a two-year devotional reading plan. In the back pages of the book are located More Help for Your Spiritual Growth. In this section you will find He Did This Just for You Verses, Spiritual Growth Verses, 30 Studies for New Believers, The Big Picture: A 30-Day Overview to the New Testament, and a "Where to Turn When" index.

The pages are thin, which I personally don't like. They easily crease and cling to one another making page turning difficult. This could be due to the chilly climate I live in (MI) and may not be a problem in warmer climates. I enjoy making notes and underlining in my Bible as I study, so the thinness of these pages concerns me regarding bleed-through. The print is good unless you are a maturing adult who prefers larger text.

I would highly recommend this Bible to anyone, whether seasoned in Scripture or brand new to its teachings.

(In accordance with the FTC's guidelines: This book was given freely for review by Thomas Nelson. Their gift has in no way influenced my opinions.)

A Great Addition to Your Study Library!

This is not my first study Bible. I have several in my library and I refer to them periodically in the preparation of weekly teaching presentations and sermons. Being very familiar with Max Lucado, I was very interested in reviewing his newest study Bible. Much of this book is a rewrite of his earlier Devotional Bible. In this edition, the devotionals have been given their own pages as opposed to previously these were put into side notes, alongside the Biblical text.
I was impressed with this Bible. There are copious study notes to help make sense of difficult passages, as well as many devotionals to help guide one's quiet time. The typeface is clean and while small, it is easy to read. I especially appreciated the introductions to each book. These help set the historical context and explain the key themes. This is especially useful with some of the Old Testament books which are not as frequently read by Christians today as their New Testament counterparts.
The studies for New Believers, a two year devotional reading plan, and a devotional index make this a very nice addition to your study materials.

I found the application notes in this Bible were presented in typical Lucado style. The life lessons present a practical application of the Biblical principle in our life, and provide the catalyst to foment action in our daily walk.

Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Thomas Nelson Publishing through their BookSneeze book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

The Max Lucado Life Lessons NKJV Study Bible is great for this m

The Max Lucado Life Lessons NKJV Study Bible is great for this momma who is more often serving in Sunday School than sitting through a sermon. It has a definite place in devotional reading and study. This is my first NKJV Bible, which I appreciate, as it is the version my children are memorizing from at AWANA. It is a little easier to read (less Thee/Thy tongue-twisting), while still maintaining the beloved (in my case, at any rate) vocabulary and poetry of the KJV.

What is unique about this Bible? Clearly, the text remains the same, so the extra features are what sets it apart.

Each section (Whether one chapter or two... it varies throughout) features "Life Lessons" in the side margins. These "lessons" follow a pattern

They summarize the Situation in the text.
Observations give bite-sized nuggets of truth that can be extrapolated from the situation.
The Inspiration portions are devotional excerpts from Max Lucado writings that are appropriate to the passage. I appreciate the thought-provoking inspiration of Max Lucado.
Application asks questions that help one to see the relevance of the passage to their life, or gives suggestions on things to DO that relate to internalizing the passage.
Exploration gives Scripture References for further study~which allows a deeper look than devotional study if so desired.

Other features include articles scattered throughout that focus on Christ Through the Bible, and New Life in Christ, as well as full-page topical devotionals that could be good for group discussion. A Two Year Reading Plan is included, if you are a check-the-box sort of person. :)

From a physical/aesthetic standpoint, I prefer this hardcover version as a "Read-at-home" Bible, vs a "Carry-with-me-everywhere" Bible due to its weight and bulk. The typeface is easily readable, with distinct subject headings. The Life Lessons are in a smaller, clean type-face, and there are many "ponderables" (Twitter ready?) that could be overlooked by virtue of their lighter ink, but have the ability to catch your attention, if you are looking, with a larger font size. Here's an example

"God's love can't be legislated, but it can be chosen. Choose it won't you? For the sake of your heart." - Max Lucado (Come Thirsty)
This review is of the Hardcover version.

    Amazing Study Bible!

I love the Bible. I probably have 20+ different Bibles in my house, all either a different translation or different type of study Bible. When I was given the opportunity to review, "The Lucado Life Lessons Study Bible" I jumped at the chance. What sets this Bible apart from other Study Bibles is the features Lucado has contributed:
*Life Lessons-These appear throughout the Scripture in the margins, it's a "run-down" on what a certain section is about. What's happening, what we can observe, and what we can learn from it. All given in Lucado's unique style, as if you're sitting there having a conversation with him.
*Full-Page Devotional Studies-Throughout the text are several full-page topical devotional studies covering a wide variety of topics: disappointment, fear, prayer, money, truth, salvation. etc. (I can't tell you all of them now can I?) Each one has a brief discussion about the topic, a scripture passage to study, & questions pertaining to the topic.
*Christ Through the Bible-These articles are there to help the reader understand that the story of the Bible, the Old & New Testaments, are really the story of Christ, 1 story of God's plan to bring us salvation through his Son. Each one explains simply how that passage relates to Christ, & to our salvation.
*New Life in Christ-These articles are there for the sole purpose of walking the reader through the plan of salvation as it is revealed. It helps the reader to learn about salvation & discipleship/the Christian walk.
The Back of the Bible has a section designed for spiritual growth, it includes:
*He Did This Just for You Verses-A listing of verses showing what Christ did for you, what he does for you, and who He is.
*New Believer Studies-This is 30 day's worth of short studies. They start with a question, "Have you ever wondered" & then give scriptures to read, a short paragraph or two on the topic, & a few application questions. Finally it lists a few more verses that can be used for a more in-depth study, & a quote from Lucado for inspiration.
*"Where to Turn When" Index-Come here when you're feeling angry, depressed, doubtful, stressed, etc, there is a list of helpful verses for each question/feeling.
There is also a 30-day New Testament reading plan & a 2-year whole Bible reading plan, there is a devotional index that tells you what page devotional notes and/or verses relating to certain topics can be found on.
Like I said, I love the Bible, it is God's Word and I cannot get enough of it. Study Bibles are readily available, but this one is unique. It has Max Lucado's unique style throughout with the inspirational devotions, his applications, his notes, quotes from his books, etc. None of that though detracts from the beauty of God's Word. The way that this is put together is beautiful & only draws you into God's Word more, which should be the goal of any Study Bible. To draw you into God's Word, to grow that desire, to help you study it, & grow in your understanding of it. This Bible does that. If you are looking for a Bible, I would highly recommend this one.

    Great Study Bible

The Lucado Life Lessons Study Bible offers several ways to study the bible. It has a devotional index, a two-year reading plan, lessons throughout the text and a study for new believers. This study bible is very functional and can be tailor to the way you want to study. Each page has a very clean look to it with a trace of color for great eye appeal. The only drawback is the page numbering location which is in the top middle of the page. This is very minor and takes some getting used to but will not distract you from the overall use of this bible. I highly recommend the study bible.

    Great Gift Idea

The Lucado Life Lessons Study Bible, NKJV Inspirational Applications for Living Your Faith by Max Lucado is exactly what the title implies. It is a Study Bible that gives practical advice about life lessons as it relates to scripture through the use of devotionals, which are written in the sidebars. Also, this Bible uses Christ Through the Bible sidebars that go along with the scripture reading for that day.

What I like about this Study Bible is that it not only gives us side notes about the passage, but it also shares life lessons through devotions. I really like that it gives a brief blurb about each book and who wrote it so that you can have an idea of the historical time line and setting. This Bible uses the NKJV, which is an understandable version, and the hardcover seems very durable. I believe this would make a great gift for those wanting to delve deeper into the Scriptures and learn how they relate to us today. One criticism that I have though is that the typeface seems a little small and very scrunched together. I would still recommend this Bible to others, especially for gifting purposes.

    Fantastic and Fabulous

"The Lucado Life Lessons Study Bible, NKJV" by 'Max Lucado' - BOOK REVIEW

The Lucado Life Lessons Study Bible has come out in New King James Version with scintillating features like life lessons, devotional bible studies, topical articles, reading plan, etc. Max Lucado has written the applications all throughout this Bible. Being the best-selling author and writer and preacher at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio of Texas, Max Lucado does splendid job of explaining the truths from various books of Bible. He has worked hard to give a comprehensive treatment to his work and it is evident in this Bible.

This Study Bible is flooded with information like 2 Year Devotional Reading Program, 'Where to turn When.' Index, 'The Big Picture' 30 Day Reading Plan, Spiritual Growth Verses, New Believer Studies, 'He did this just for you' Verses, 'New Life in Christ' articles, 'Christ Through Bible' messages, etc. All these tools are highly informative and helpful to anyone reading the Bible. One most attractive factor is that the applications spelt in the Bible by Lucado are based on sound biblical principles and values.

The Bible has come out as a hard bound edition and is easy to handle by the users. The fonts relating to the commentary of Lucado are slightly smaller than the optimum size. The same could have been made in normal font size which is used for bible verses in this edition.

I highly recommend this Bible for anyone who wishes to learn from the Bible and implement and practice those biblical principles in their life.

I give this one five out of five stars.

Please note that I received this book from the publisher Thomas Nelson through its book review bloggers program Book Sneeze in exchange for an honest review.

A Completely Revised Devotional Bible based on Max Lucado's writings

I remember I bought my first copy of the Inspirational Study Bible, NKJV with devotional life lessons edited by Max Lucado in the year 1998 (see picture below). It has been 10 years since and the new Lucado Life Lessons Study Bible, NKJV is a completely revised edition (with a different name as well) and for the first time, all the devotional materials in this new edition are excerpted from Max Lucado's entire career of writings -from his first book to his latest release, Outlive Your Life. Comparing the older edition that I had with this latest edition, this new edition follows the same format as the previous one - with each devotional lesson starts with a "Situation", follow by "Observation", then "Inspiration" (which is the excerpted piece of writings from one of Lucado's books), and closes with "Application" and "Exploration". The older edition has a special 48-inserts printed on good quality paper, offering encouraging words from Max on a variety of inspirational topics. This has been expanded and replaced with a series of 48-full page topical studies also scattered throughout the entire text. The dictionary/concordance section from the older version has been replaced with a section of devotional index on selected life application topics (each topic is supplied with selected relevant verses with suggestions to read the related passages in the text). The 100 of the most inspiring passages of the Bible in the older version has been replaced with two new sections "He Did This Just For You" verses and "Spiritual Growth" verses (new selections of bible verses). I still prefer the older version in terms of the quality of printing paper (better paper quality in the older version) and I like the 100 bible passages personally selected by Max Lucado in the older version. Nonetheless, the new version has a cool section of 30 Studies for New Believers. I find this section to be an excellent section even for not-so-new believers. Finally, as with the previous editions, I personally think that this NKJV bible should be more aptly called the Lucado Life Lessons Devotional Bible rather than Lucado Life Lessons Study Bible, as there is really not much of exegetical materials or hermeneutics of the scripture that warrant it to be a study bible. Neither is this bible contains any maps or related materials. Even the dictionary/concordance section has been taken out. The only consolation would probably be the additional capsule outlining the main messages of each books of the Bible in the Introduction page.

    Finally the perfect study bible!

The Lucado Life Lessons Study Bible (NKJV)

This study bible is perfect for anyone who is a fan of Max Lucado's previous works. It has several special sections to help you study the bible more thoroughly. It offers a two-year devotional study plan, study guides, studies by subject, among all of the life lessons provided throughout the text. The text is in the New King James Version so it's very easy to read.

Personally, I'm a huge fan of Max Lucado. I was really impressed with the design and format of how this version is presented. The life lessons Max has written on the sidebars help to understand the text easily. He always has a way to make the reader think outside of the box. The study guides have been so easy to use for group discussion with my study group. The hardback edition is not only very durable but guaranteed for life! The typeface of the text is the perfect size for any reader. I would highly recommend The Lucado Life Lessons Study Bible to everyone no matter where they are on their walk. The life application lessons and stories are a perfect companion for any christian living through faith.

Note: I received a complimentary version of this bible from the the bloggers program through Booksneeze. I do not have to provide a positive review just an honest one.

    A great devotional study bible

The Life Lessons Study Bible by Max Lucado
Lucado's Life Lessons Study Bible has a lot of great features such as over 1,000 Life Lessons, a Topical Index, and Devotional Index by topics, A Two Year Bible Reading Plan, New Believer Studies, 30 Day Reading Plans, Spiritual Growth Verses, and more! This Bible takes a lot from Lucado's well known books old and latest such as his latest release, Outlive Your Life.
I am glad that Lucado uses the NKJV version of the Bible, easy to read, as Lucado adds his insights and teachings from years of personal bible study and writing and applies them to the scriptures. He provides margin notes that give life application lessons. Lucado also includes a two-year devotional plan along with a section at the end of the book that includes: He Did This Just for You verses, Spiritual Growth verses, Studies for New Believers, A 30-Day Overview of the New Testament, and An index of Where to Turn When.
If you enjoy Max Lucado's books, then you will enjoy this Bible. The commentaries are quotes from Lucado's books as well as insight into the scripture. The commentary is in the margins on the outer edge. It is a great Bible study tool. The commentary and insights touch the heart and engage the mind for further study.

Interspersed throughout the chapters are mini-devotionals which are one to two pages long and contain the same depth as the marginal commentary. It is a great Bible for the new convert or the mature Christian.
I enjoy Lucado's writing style; it is the same way he preaches, both inspirational and encouraging. In simple terms every page has study/devotional material. Each "lesson" includes the situation, observations, inspiration, application and exploration.
For anyone looking for a Bible that has interesting insights and endearing stories, I would recommend this Bible. The devotional material is brief and engaging. The Bible is available in hardcover and Leather soft cover with a presentation page making a good gift for the new Christian or seasoned believer. I highly recommend this book

Review: The Lucado Life Lessons Study Bible

I received The Lucado Life Lessons Study Bible from Thomas Nelson for my review. I have been enjoying using this Bible and would like to recommend it to you today.

    My thoughts:
I enjoy using a new Bible and this one is a very nice one. I have always been a fan of author Max Lucado's books. In this well-designed, easy-to-read Bible you will find "Life Lessons" printed in the margins which include the situation, observation, inspiration (from one of Lucado's books), application, and exploration. There are also multiple articles throughout the Bible, including "Christ through the Bible" and "New Life in Christ" as well as a two year reading plan. Something I enjoyed were the introductions to the various books and the quotes from Max Lucado in the white spaces of the margins.

This is a nice Bible and I look forward to using it more. It would make a nice gift for someone that needs some encouragement.

The new year of 2011 has just begun and I've started going through the two year Bible reading plan found in this study Bible but there are also ninety day and one year plans as well!
