Publishers Weekly
A shape-changing priestess and a time-traveling relic hunter quest together for the Holy Grail in Kearney's far-fetched series debut. Lady Cael, high priestess of the planet Pendragon, is the only woman of her generation who can shift forms from human to dragon. Lucan Roarke is from a future Earth where most of the population is sterile. To save his people, Lucan travels to Pendragon seeking the legendary Grail. When Pendragon's military frames Lucan and Cael for the murder of their colleagues, the two are forced to depend on each other to recover the Grail and survive. Kearney (Dancing with Fire) writes a credibly (and explicitly) passionate and rough romance, but factual errors and a mishmash of myth will jar readers familiar with Arthurian legend, leaving this solely for fans of sexy space opera intrigue. Ugh!

You can only suspend disbelieve so far. When the characters themselves cannot maintain the fiction that they hold their beliefs to be true, well, then I can't stand the dysfunction! Basically, the heroine is supposed to be this inviolate holy figure. However, within the first couple of pages she is already panting for the hero--a Earth man seeking an Arthurian legend on her home planet--and breaking her life-long held taboos. It only gets worse from there. I will give her points for finally have a male character leaving the planet earth and meeting an alien. However, it is the only creative feature and it cannot redeem the inane plot, lack of character development and thoroughly exasperating knowledge that she is writing more of these things.

It would be better to go do your laundry than read this book.

Book One of the Pendragon Legacy, Lucan is part fantasy, part romance and a wholly satisfying escape!

    Synopsis:

Set at some future time when the Earth's survival is uncertain, Lucan is forced to travel to a distant planet of Pendragon in his search for King Arthur's Holy Grail. The Grail is the possible solution to the infertility problem that is facing mankind. If Lucan fails, his whole race faces extinction.

Lady Cael is the high priestess of Pendragon. Trained in her duties from a young age, Cael has been isolated since her family was forbidden to touch her at age five. She is equally revered and feared by her people because of her properties as a dragonshaper. It is forbidden to touch a dragonshaper. When she first meets Lucan, she is surprised that he is unafraid and treats her like a woman.

Lady Cael and Lucan narrowly escape the fire at the excavation site. Unsure of who sabotaged the search for the Holy Grail, Lady Cael and Lucan are forced into hiding. As they work together each with their own secrets, they fall deeply in love. When their secrets are revealed, Lady Cael and Lucan must work together to save those that they love and their threatened peoples.

    Review:

This is the first Susan Kearney novel that I've read and the first in her new series The Pendragon Legacy. I loved Lucan. First, the characters draw you in. You find yourself sympathizing with Lady Cael from the start of the novel. She feels her isolation deeply but is committed to serving her family and her peopled as the High Priestess. You wish that she could have something beyond the Pendragon equivalent of the life of a vestal virgin. I admit to hoping that Lady Cael would indulge in a show of strength or black humor when faced with her jealous and mean spirited sisters. Lucan is a wonderful romantic lead: strong, a scholar of ancient languages, funny, fiercely protective of Lady Cael. I don't want to reveal too much of the plot, but Lucan reminded me of a mix of Luke Skywalker and Indiana Jones with special powers.

Whether you're looking for a romantic read or a fun fantasy novel, I highly recommend Lucan. I'm very much looking forward to reading the next in the Pendragon Legacy. In the meantime, I'll look for Susan Kearney's older novels!

    A Paranormal Page-Turner

No children have been born on Earth for two generations. Pollution has left her inhabitants sterile and the human race faces certain extinction but one man, archeologist and linguist, Lucan Rourke believes there is a way to reverse the sterility. He's heard the legends of King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table and the mythical Holy Grail, a cup supposedly containing healing properties that legend says Arthur left in Avalon. Explorers have searched for Avalon for centuries without success but now, deep in a cave in the shadow of Cadbury Castle, Lucan has found a star map, thousands of years old, yet more accurately detailed than if it had been produced with today's space telescopes - a map detailing the path to a moon named Pendragon, King Arthur's last name, and printed below the moon, a single word - Avalon. All Lucan has to do to save his planet is find the Holy Grail.in Avalon.on Pendragon.on the other side of the universe.

A member of Pendragon's scientific team, Lady Cael also is searching for the Holy Grail, hoping to use its healing properties for the good of her people and to save the life of someone very dear to her. As her people's healer and High Priestess, she has been set apart from others since the age of five, both feared, and revered, fated to spend her life alone, never touched and never loved. Only Lucan, the newest member of the scientific team working to unlock the secrets of Avalon, has ever looked beyond her title and treated her as a person, as a woman, but she dare not encourage his interest for every Dragonian knows the penalty for touching the High Priestess is swift and irreversible.

When the scientific team is betrayed by those who seek the Holy Grail for corruptive personal power, it sends Lucan and Cael running for their lives. From freezing mountain tops to blazing beaches to secret caves and tunnels, they must learn to trust one another and work together if they hope to defeat the evil forces and free the Holy Grail. They must also deal with the blazing attraction between them. Lucan is a "well-traveled" man and Cael is virginal but when she is finally awakened to the pleasure of Lucan's touch she becomes a force to be reckoned with. This is a woman who knows what she wants and isn't afraid to demand it and Lucan is definitely up to the task. (pun intended) The sex is hot, passionate, at times almost animalistic in intensity, yet excruciatingly tender at others. These two seem to have been made for each other but secrets, Cael's unique heritage, Lucan's desperate need to save his planet, a corrupted military and another "offworlder" who may or may not be an ally, threaten to tear them, and their respective worlds, apart.

Susan Kearney captivated me with her action-packed, emotional tale of Arthurian legend, intergalactic space travel, dragonshapers and other inhabited worlds throughout our vast, and largely unexplored, universe. To be honest, I couldn't turn the pages of this book fast enough while, at the same time, I didn't want the story to end. Luckily, LUCAN is the first book in Kearney's The Pendragon Legacy trilogy which means I have two more to look forward to. RION, the second book in the trilogy will be released November 24th.

This is an interesting blending of science fiction, Camelot mythos, and romance

Humanity's future appears to be extinction as sterility is the norm on Earth. Archeologist and Avalon expert Lucan Rourke is sent to planet Pendragon on a top secret mission to find the Holy Grail that he believes will save mankind.

On Pendragon High Priestess Lady Cael is the only female dragon shapeshifter. She and her colleagues are also seeking the Holy Grail believed hidden in Avalon, surrounded by impregnable energy barriers at a time when the surface is breaking apart. Lucan joins the top secret project, but even as he finds a way through their first obstacle, the military frames him and Cael for murdering two of their compatriots as they want the Grail for their own use.

This is an interesting blending of science fiction, Camelot mythos, and romance although the Arthurian fantasy elements seem somewhat out of place. Lucan knows his mission has no time for love, but he finds it difficult to stay the course after meeting Cael. The High priestess understands her mission, but has the same issues as Lucan has after their first encounter. Although somewhat overwhelming with the Camelot in space theme as earth is infertile, fans will enjoy the first Pendragon Legacy thriller while looking forward to the escapdes of Lucan's sister Marisa and Rion of planet Honor.

    I Also Recommend:

    Great Read on any planet!

Love and science have something in common - some of the greatest successes come from perceived failures. This is exactly how Lucan Roarke and Lady Cael feel about each other and what is happening between them. Lucan is an archeologist from Earth who finds himself on a mysterious and magical planet where Cael is the High Priestess and ruler by birthright and a Dragonshaper by destiny. Being a Dragonshaper gives her ability to morph into a Dragon at will and makes her one of a kind in any universe. So how is it that these two have found each other, they are both searching for King Arthur's Holy Grail to cure family illness and stop the unnecessary suffering that comes with it. Both Lucan and Cael are on a mission that is greater than any goal ever achieved and there is only one thing that will slow the process down - love.

During the search and excavation in the area where the Holy Grail is assumed to be located the experiment goes terribly wrong and Lucan and Cael must go on the run of their lives. The government turns out to be corrupt and it comes after them for perceived crimes against humanity that they had no responsibility for. They find comfort in each other's arms and warmth in the depths of their hearts as they keep one step ahead of the devil on their heels trying to figure out who is friend and foe.

But when Cael reveals her dragon to Lucan and tells him that they shared her dragon blood will Lucan stick with her or let her go. The going gets tough and no one is sure who the real enemy is or who can be trusted when it seems everyone has an agenda and no one is on their side. But they find they do have someone to trust and rely upon if fate will give them a little push in the right direction. Yet what Lucan and Cael discover is that some experiences are worth the time and effort and the person sharing them with you is worth the danger of being hurt and losing your heart or maybe both your hearts!

Paranormal is a hot market right now and while everyone is following in standard writing this book takes you into a completely different realm that is most enjoyable. The dragon angle is unique and written in well with not too much complication or over-dramatic issues arising from the scenario. The characters are interesting and you truly believe that they are on the run of their lives and that if they don't trust one another than nothing is worth fighting for.

    Steamy and Intense

Author Susan Kearney is a native of New Jersey, writes full time and has sold books to the industries' top publishing houses. As an award-winning author, Kearney earned a Business Degree from the University of Michigan. Her knowledge and experience spans throughout the romance genre, and her fifty plus books include contemporary, romantic suspense, historical, futuristic, science fiction and paranormal novels- With Rion as part of this series coming in December 2009, and Jordan coming in March 2010. She resides in Tampa, Florida with her husband and children.
High Priestess and Healer of her people on Pendragon, Lady Cael, has always accepted her fate and destiny. Her calling and position doesn't allow for a life mate, nor can she be touched or it will break taboo and the will of Goddess. Both feared and respected equally, Cael has become accustomed to her life of solitude. But a mysterious explorer named Lucan Rourke doesn't know her secrets and his forbidden touch is making her crave things that her birthright doesn't allow. Lucan has only one purpose for being on Pendragon- find the mythical Holy Grail and get back to Earth before it's too late. The fate of Earth's survival rests in his hands, so he cannot afford the immediate attraction he feels for Cael, nor the distraction. Soon they must join forces to defeat the army of Tribes, who want to find the Grail and use it for selfish purposes. When a warrant goes out for their arrest for murder, they must fight not only to find the Grail, but to survive long enough to use it.
This is a futuristic romance, and if I'm being honest, I did a rather large dramatic eye roll when I learned of the Grail as a plot line, with King Arthur traveling to this planet hundreds of years ago to keep it safe. However, I quickly reminded myself that this was a fictional/fantasy/futuristic book and the author's gifted writing makes you believe in the seemingly out-there story. That's what makes Kearney stand out in this rapidly evolving sub-genre of romance. With a great eye for detailed setting and quick-witted dialog, readers can revel in the fast-pace action and get hooked from cover to cover. Steamy, intense, and sometimes hilarious- I very much look forward to the two other books in this series and where she goes with it. Recommended!

Lucan-A Space Ride You Won't Want to Miss

I had the privilege too read and review an advance copy of Lucan-Book 1 of the Pendragon Legacy. I have three words to describe this book.It is fabulous!!!

Cael is the High Priestess and Healer of the planet Avalon. She is also a dragon shaper, the only one on her planet. Traditions force her to lead an isolated, lonely life. She is not allowed to be touched and can never be mated. Cael longs to be a normal person but she knows she must uphold her position.

Lucan, a linguist from the planet Earth has come to Avalon in search of the Holy Grail, Earth's last hope for survival. He has joined a scientific team in search of the Grail and has plans to steal the Grail and take it to Earth. The people of Earth have become barren and no children have been born for years. If he can't find the Grail to cure this problem, the population of Earth will soon be gone.

Cael desperately needs the Grail to cure her young nephew. Cancer is stealing his life. There is also a much darker force after the Grail and the fate of several planets depends on Lucan and Cael finding the Grail.

As they work together to find the Holy Grail, Lucan and Cael battle the pull of attraction to each other. Neither can afford to be distracted from their goal of finding the Grail to save their loved ones. But love and lust can't be denied and has some fascinating results.

I can't praise this book enough. It drew me in from the first and kept me riveted till the end. Lucan-The Pendragon Legacy is an action packed, emotional ride that you won't want to miss! I can't wait for the second book in this series!
