A SINFULLY APPEALING RAKE

Lord Lucien Escher, is a renowed London rake who believes there is not a woman in the world who cannot be seduced, and is determined to prove it, come what may.

AN INTELLIGENT AND DETERMINED WOMAN

Madeline is determined to save her treasured ancestral home and has no use for love or the tricks of an unredeemable scoundrel. Against her better judgment, however, she is powerfully drawn to the elusive and dangerous Lucien, whose hard-hearted façade hides a tragedy that is slowly devouring him from within.

As Lucien and Madeline circle each other in a magnetic play of desire and denial, their passion will rise to a crescendo of longing and sacrifice that will change their fates forever.

From the author of Heart of a Knight, a RITA-award winning historical romance.

Editorial Reviews

Evelyn Feiner
"Barbara Samuel's excellent character portrayals allow us an intimate picture of the tortures that haunt Lucien, Madeline and her mother."
All About Romance - Evelyn Feiner
"Barbara Samuel's excellent character portrayals allow us an intimate picture of the tortures that haunt Lucien, Madeline and her mother."
Smart Bitches, Trashy Books - Sarah Wendell
"One of the most innovative and charming features of the story is the depth to which both Lucien and Madeline recognize their own roles as Rake Hero and Perfect Heroine. Well-schooled by a socially-aware stepmother, Madeline is more than conscious of her need to keep Lucien away from herself, as he would think nothing of ruining a virgin and walking away."

It pain me to say that this is the first book I read from this author that I didn't like. Usually in her books she starts slow but then the characters give life to the story and you dont want to put down the book. This book was a big case of cat and mouse all through the book. The hero had no saving grace and all through the book he just wanted to get the girl to his bed. She stayed strong for most of the book but well I wish there was one book that the girl would tell the rake "go to hell" and she succeedes. The side story of the mom and her lover was just painful. His love was so strong that when he thought she cheated on him he jumped in the first bed he found the same night? I like a story of a rake brought down to his knees but this story had no plot except seduction and no purpose except making the reader feel misrable about love. There was no one with a comic release and no lightness to the story. As I said the side story was even more depressing than the main one. I will stick with her other stories.

Madeline is one of my favorite historical heroines. I have reread this novel many times, both for enjoyment and to study the author's expertise in plot and character development. Barbara Samuel is not only a master, but a maestro at character motivation and conflict--especially in Romance. I adored this book. Lucien and Madeline are not to be missed!

I fell in love. I wept out loud. And then I feel in love again. I love regency romances and the sexual freedom mixed with sexual repression that marks the era. This book was sweet and erotic at the same time. A must read for romantics

FANTASTIC! I wished there was a Epilogue to this, that is my only complant with this author. I read Heart of a Knight, which was also amazing, but that had a very short epilogue too. Also, PLEASE BARNES AND NOBLE, get more of her books. I realize some were published 15-20 years ago, but I just found this author, and would love to read more of her earlier works. This is a great story - alot happens that surprised me. I loved not only the main character's but the other's too. The author has a way of tugging at your heart.

Lucien has the reputation as a rake but he is a tormented man with a sad past and refuses love. Madeline is a beatiful young woman that needs to marry a man of wealth to save her home and lovely gardens. She has been tutored by her widowed mother on how to avoid the charms of rakes and has set her mind on Madeline marrying a pudgy, wealthy Lord named Charles. But, rake or not, Madeline begins to have feelings for Lucien as he sets out to seduce her. No matter how hard tgey try, love wins out. Great read!

Lucien was a pervert... A real creep. His perversion to sleep with the female lead was ridiculous. No one is worth all that.
