Overview

The gigantic comet had slammed into Earth, forging earthquakes a thousand times too powerful to measure on the Richter scale, tidal waves thousands of feet high. Cities were turned into oceans; oceans turned into steam. It was the beginning of a new Ice Age and the end of civilization. But for the terrified men and women chance had saved, it was also the dawn of a new struggle for survival--a struggle more dangerous and challenging than any they had ever known....
"Massively entertaining."
CLEVELAND PLAIN-DEALER

A giant comet collides with Earth causing earthquakes, tidal waves, and destruction of unbelievable proportions; but for the survivors, the terror has just begun.

    Lucifer's Hammer

As an avid reader of these kinds of books, I found this one to be one of the better ones. It's very realistic and believable in it's descriptions of what could happen in the aftermath of a horrible event such as the comet in this book. It gets you to thinking and wanting to make sure you are prepared for any catastrophe.

    FRICKEN EPIC

That's about all i can say, EPIC. Yes this book is extremely drawn out but very detailed, it reminds me of Stephen King's style of writing. My next puchase shall be cases of power bars, bullets, and bottles of water after reading this one.

    Great Story

Always on the lookout for an interesting EOW story I found Lucifers Hammer one of the best I have ever read. Could not put it down. It starts slow but takes it's time getting you used to the characters. It builds until the 'Day' the asteroid hits and starts on a whirlwind ride. Thourghly enjoyable and I would recommend this book to everyone.

    Good after 200 pages

This is a very slow starting book. However it sort of comes together in the end.

    more from this reviewer

    Awesome

This is the best 'End of the World As We Know It' thriller I have read. It's right up there with Stephen King's 'The Stand' in scale.
If you want a GOOD YARN, read this. The most incredible image I hvae carried with me since I read this book is that of the SURFER riding the wave. I read this book back in the 80's and have NEVER forgotten it.

A Classic Book for Post Apocalyptic Fans

This book is a classic and very interesting in that it brought back memories of when we had no cell phones. The first half of the book is basically character development and I think it went too long. I have to admit that I was bored for the first 1/3 of the book and gradually got better. Once the action started going on, it was a fun read. Read this book if you are really into post apocalyptic stuff but I would not get this book if you are just starting out. There was a little info about survival but not much and it was basically about two powerful factions trying to survive against nature and each other.

    It bored me

I thought I would love Lucifer's Hammer, but I was very disappointed. I loved Footfall so I thought I would like this as well. I gave up on it after 300 pages. It was boring to me. It seemed like scenes dragged out forever, and even the comet hitting seemed boring. I found myself not caring what happened to any of the characters. They just seemed to wooden for me. I cant recommend Lucifer's Hammer. It was a big bore to me.

End of the world survival book

Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle have ended the world, but they give hope for a different future. In a page burning never put down novel about how a group of people survive.

    Death from above

If I could rate this novel any higher I would. All EOW should use this novel as a reference. In many words I could not describe in my mind the actual horror it brought me.But all in all a great novel.

    Classic EOW book

If you are a fan of EOW (end of world) books then this is a must read. A little dated, but this is one of the two books that set the tone for all EOW books since. Although I have read a few newer post-apocalyptic books that were better, this is a must read.

    The possible made a reality

An asteroid hits the earth causing global devestation. This story takes you through the aftermath and Nivens vision of what might happen. He doesn't paint a pretty picture and shows how far so many people can sink into the mire of cruelty and viciousness. It also shows how others overcome their situation and pull togather to try and put civilization back on course. This is a Must read for anyone, not just the Sci-Fi crowd.

    hammer of the gods

great book! if this was to ever happen, people would react the way they did in the book. if you don't think so, look at how people have reacted in lesser doom-or-die-real-life areas of the planet.

    I'm Hammered to this book

A few years ago I picked up this book not knowing that it was going to be the best piece of work I have ever laid eyes upon and given actually adornment to. I was captivated from beginning to ending, and I still am confounded with this book to this day. I have to give it a title of my most favorite book.

The absolute best end-of-the-world novel I have ever read! 5 stars +

I picked up this book 4 years ago and absolutely could not put it down until I was done. I have re-read it once since then and found it just as enjoyable and horrific the second time through. This book is not like those 'Hollywood' books and movies where the impact is the end of the story. This book deals with what happens after the disaster. How we as humans need to be a part of something larger than ourselves, and how quickly we turn on each other when we are not. How many different ways can the same species react to a disaster of Global proportions? Read this book and find out!

Survival in a Celestial Shooting Gallery

Niven and Pournelle have always been a fantastic team and this is one of their best efforts. No one in 1978 was thinking about impacts from Space that could cause our extinction except for a small and dedicated group of scientists led by Dr. Walter Alvarez and his Son. Two years later, they came up with the theory that an Impacter six point two miles across smashed into what is now the Yucatan Peninsula and began a chain of events that led to the extinction of seventy-five percent of all Life on Earth, the majority of which had been the Dinosaurs. 'Lucifer's Hammer' would have become a movie more than a decade before 'Deep Impact', but the fact that it was written and that the world is taking such a threat from Space seriously shows that this was no science fiction novel written merely for entertainment--IT COULD HAPPEN!
