Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
A Burmese elongated tortoise named Lucille and a California desert tortoise named Tanky belong to Savanna and Kaitlin Murphy, two young girls who live with their parents in Wisconsin. When the Murphy family decides to go on vacation, they drop off Lucille and Tanky at the George family’s house (home of Troilus the tortoise) for pet sitting. The morning after the Murphys leave town, the Georges discover that Lucille is missing. She has managed to escape from the backyard and spends her day wandering around the neighborhood, stumbling upon adventures along the way. These adventures include being swept up by a bicyclist and dropped off in Picnic Point, and crossing paths with several animals, including a ferocious snapping turtle. The Murphys return early from their vacation and search everywhere for Lucille. Luckily, she is returned to her owners in the end. Tortoise facts appear at the bottom of each page. Not only can readers follow Lucille on her journey, they can learn about tortoises, too. For example, one tortoise fact states that, due to its slow metabolism, a tortoise can stay healthy for many days without eating. Bandelin and Dacey do an excellent job of illustrating the story. The bright, full-page watercolor illustrations draw the reader in, and the intricate details of each tortoise are astounding. This colorful story of adventure is sure to entertain and enlighten children and turtle-lovers everywhere. Reviewer: Kelly Dwight

K-Gr 3-When a tortoise's owners go on vacation, the reptile takes the opportunity to slip away from her substitute caregivers and have an adventure. Exploring the woods is grand-until Lucille has a scary run-in with a snapping turtle and can't find her way home. Luminous paintings capture the wonder of the natural world. Counteracting the considerable anthropomorphism, "Tortoise Facts" appear at the bottom of many of the book's pages, offering real information about habitats, diet, and physiology. A low-key additional purchase.-Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MD Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Inspired by a true incident, this fact-laced, handsomely illustrated episode follows a young pet tortoise as she lumbers into a wide but rarely threatening world. A mere stripling of 30, Lucille impulsively climbs out of her outdoor pen and takes a stroll down the street-but before she can stroll back, a friendly stranger spots her and, mistaking her for a wild turtle, transports her to a distant woodsy area. Rich in fine, accurately rendered natural detail, the pictures put viewers down at ground level with Lucille as she encounters a snake, a hostile snapping turtle and other wildlife. In a mystical turn, she meets an ancient spirit atop a Native-American effigy mound, then the next morning plants herself near a poster her worried human family has put up, and is soon rescued. Though Lucille and the other animals talk to each other, they keep something of their animal natures rather than just being humans in disguise, and both in the narrative and in side boxes the authors discuss tortoise breeds, behavior, proper care and related topics. It adds up to an engaging mix of science and story. (Picture book. 7-9)

Margaret George

Margaret George, who lives in Madison, Wisconsin comes from a Southern background and has traveled extensively. After reading numerous novels that viewed Henry VIII through the eyes of his enemies and victims, she became determined to let Henry speak for himself, and it took fifteen years, about three hundred books of backgound reading, three visits to England to see every extant building associated with Henry, and five handwritten drafts for her to answer the question: What was Henry really like?
