Lucky Goes to Schoolby Gail Herman, Norman Gorbaty, Andrew Bates
When Lucky's owner goes to school, where will Lucky go? Who will he meet? Find out in this fun-filled Level 2 reader.
Children's LiteratureAs a Level 1 book for preschool through first grade, the story is about Lucky the dog and his adventures with other dogs while "his boy" spends his first day at school. It is one of the publisher's "All Aboard Reading" series, and the controlled vocabulary is just the right challenge for a beginning reader with such dog words as chase and wag. The illustrations are vivid and colorful and enhance the simple story well. Children may question a group of dogs playing in the park alone in this day of leash laws. The title implies that the dog "goes" to school. Lucky only walks to the school. It's a small point but one that five-year-old children spot easily. 2001, Grosset & Dunlap, $3.99. Ages 4 to 6. School Library JournalPreS-Gr 1-Lucky's boy is starting school and the pup doesn't think he can have fun without him. Then he sees not only lots of boys and girls in the schoolyard but lots of dogs as well. All of the canines seem sad until they go to the park for a day of fun. Lucky is reunited with his owner after class is dismissed and they both go home happy. Large, colorful cartoon illustrations on double-page spreads offer some visual interest but the thin plotline provides little narrative interest. A marginal purchase for collections looking for beginning readers with large type and an easy, repetitive text.-Janie Schom- berg, Leal Elementary School, Urbana, IL Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
