Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
The unorthodox narrator of Kelley's debut novel is a feisty, flippant lizard, the loyal pet of eight-year-old Todd Boucher. Perceptive Bima quickly realizes that his new master lacks self-esteem: Todd is the youngest and shortest kid in third grade and is afraid to learn to ride the racing bike he receives for his birthday. Sporting some unorthodox skills for a reptile (he understands human language and learned to read by watching Sesame Street at the pet store), Bima also issues numerous comical asides. When Todd takes him to school, the teacher advises the boy to hold Bima up higher to give his classmates a better view; Bima, fearful of heights, says to himself, "No! Higher is a bad idea, lady." Then, when a student asks, "What kind of a lizard is he?" Bima quips, "A dizzy lizard!" But, on a more significant plane, the lizard inadvertently inspires Todd to give his bike a try--and helps him come to terms and make peace with the class bully. Kelley pulls off her unusual premise with humor, and her tale will likely give a subtle boost to kids with shaky confidence. Final artwork not seen by PW. Ages 7-10. (Oct.) Children's Literature
Bima, a delightful pet lizard, tells the story of how he helps his owner, Todd, overcome his fears about learning to ride his bike and entering the obstacle course on Derby Day. This action packed book will appeal to children as a story about a lizard, a boy who learns how to ride a bike, and ultimately conquering one's fears to try something new. Humor abounds in situations such as when Bima gets put in a taco in the school cafeteria or when Bima rides in Todd's t-shirt pocket on their first wobbly bike ride together. There are expressive black and white drawings in every chapter bridging readers from picture to chapter books. Released in 2000 as a hardback, this paperback version is a delightful addition for classroom and home libraries. It would work well as a literature circle book for older elementary school students as it incorporates both humor and important themes, such as conquering fears and dealing with bullies. 2000, Puffin,

Gr 2-4-This beginning chapter book, told by a lizard, is about the eight-year-old boy with whom he lives. When Todd, who is smaller than most of his friends and self-conscious about his size, receives a Speedster bicycle for his birthday, he is pressured into entering the local bike derby even though he doesn't know how to ride it. Thus begins the hilarious adventures of Bima and Todd as they try to overcome their fears. Bima is afraid of heights and doesn't like riding along in Todd's shirt pocket on the bicycle, but of course Todd doesn't know this and insists that the lizard ride with him for good luck on the day of the event. Bima has a wonderful sense of humor, true love for his owner, and determination to help out in any way he can.-Wendy S.
