Overview

In the liner notes to Lucky Man, Waylon Jennings is quoted as saying, "When it comes to Hal Ketchum, if he sang the phone book to the right melody, I'd love it!" Strong words from the country legend, but this wonderful album supports his enthusiasm. From the opening notes of "(She's Something) You're Everything" through the album's closing "She Is," the Upstate New York native has never sounded better, and he may have delivered what could be his strongest album ever. Blessed with pristine production by another country superstar, Rodney Crowell, Lucky Man runs the stylistic gamut, from gorgeous love songs such as "Two of the Lucky Ones," a duet with Dolly Parton, and the Crowell-penned "Dreams of Martina" to country romps like the Jessie Stone rock-'n'-roll classic "Don't Let Go" and Ketchum's own "She's Still in Dallas." No matter the style, however, it's Ketchum's pure voice that's the star of the record, bringing the songs on Lucky Man to life with his bluesy, smoky, and soulful delivery. Ketchum is a new country trailblazer, having paved the way for the likes of Garth and Alan with modern country classics like his 1991 albums Small Town Saturday Night and Past the Point of Rescue. Hopefully, Lucky Man will bring this stellar singer back into the public eye.
