Overview

A choice between love and survival . . . Lucy's family is excited to spend the summer in Bar Harbor, Maine. Her minister father is pleased to preside over such a prestigious congregation, and his social-climbing wife is ecstatic at the chance to find a rich husband for her daughter. Yet Lucy wants nothing to do with the Bar Harbor social scene; she's simply excited to spend the summer by the sea, watching the waves from her favorite spot on the cliff. Despite having never gone swimming, Lucy feels an intense connection to the ocean, and meets a handsome ship-builder who shows Lucy a world she's never known, yet somehow always longed for. However, her mother will stop at nothing to keep Lucy and the ship builder apart, even if it means throwing Lucy into the arms of a wealthy man with a dangerous secret. Can Lucy break free and embrace her destiny as a daughter of the sea? Or is she doomed to waste away in a gilded cage, slowly dying of a broken heart?

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Praise for Daughters of the Sea: Hannah

“Many will identify with independent and winsome Hannah as she tries to find her place in the world.” – School Library Journal

“This novel has menacing, almost gothic overtones as well as a strong sense of time, place, and class distinctions.” – Booklist

Children's Literature - Miranda McClain
What would happen if you were to cross Jane Austen with Hans Christian Anderson? The result would probably be very similar to the "Daughters of the Sea" series by Kathryn Lasky. This book is the third one in the series and all those readers who fell in love with the mermaid sisters Hannah and May will likely kindle an equal devotion to Lucy, a minister's adopted daughter struggling to find her place in society. Lucy's social climbing parents are thrilled when she attracts the attention of a stylish duke but Lucy is wary of the charming duke and finds herself drawn to the loving arms of Phin, the handsome ship builder. Meanwhile Lucy discovers the wonderful truth about who she really is and discovers she has two equally beautiful and enchanting sisters, Hannah and May. Trouble brews when the spurned duke seeks revenge and winds up murdered. When Hannah is wrongfully accused her sisters must do all they can to clear her name, but Lasky leaves readers with a cliffhanger ending and Lucy's fate is unclear. Reviewer: Miranda McClain
