Overview

Ilene Cooper's fourth story of a boy and his beagle takes Bobby and Lucy into the wild playing fields of grade-school soccer.

Every kid loves soccer, right? Not Bobby. He likes to watch sports, but he doesn't really like to play them. He'd rather play with his beagle puppy, Lucy. But when Bobby's friend Shawn begs him to join up, Bobby finds himself stuck on a soccer team with a stern coach and several kids who have a knack for the sport. Even Lucy is better than Bobby at moving a soccer ball down the field!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Renee Farrah Vess
Bobby Quinn joins a soccer team because his best friend Shawn doesn't want to join it alone. Bobby thought he knew what he was getting into, but quickly learns there is more to soccer than just kicking the ball. Shawn has grown up playing soccer and has no problem adjusting to the team and impressing the no-nonsense Coach Morris. Bobby on the other hand feels like he's bitten off more than he can chew and wants to quit the team. Enter Lucy, Bobby's beagle puppy that quickly charmed the soccer team into naming themselves after her due to her speed on the soccer field. Unfortunately, Lucy's run onto the field was unwanted, and Coach Morris suggests a refresher in obedience training. While Bobby learns about trying new things and sticking to commitments, he also needs to learn how to be a better leader for Lucy. It's all training for his potential role as a big brother, if his parents are able to adopt a baby. This is a positive, upbeat, gentle story with real-life connections paired with rounded, soft pencil illustrations. Great for reading aloud, and discussion, this is the fourth title in the "Absolutely Lucy" series. Reviewer: Renee Farrah Vess
