Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 4 UpVery brief tales of the lives of 13 virgin saints: Ursula, Agnes, Cecilia, Agatha, Lucy, Barbara, Bega, Brigid, Christina, Margaret, Catherine, Joan, and Uncumber, written in a simple, straightforward style. Filled with cruelty, torture, gore, and ghastly death (after all, the women are martyrs, and most died for their Christian faith and purity), the stories usually include an obdurate pagan father, an importunate suitor smitten by the maiden's beauty, some horrible forms of torture from which the saints emerge miraculously unscathed, until a final beheading, piercing, or stabbing. Only Bega, Brigid, and Christina manage to survive their persecution. Full-page, delicate, fanciful watercolors show wraithlike figures being dragged naked to brothels, having breasts cut off, being burned, having their throats cut, and suffering other atrocities, as well as performing miracles, all the while remaining intact and true to Christianity. A startling, but well-done book.Patricia Pearl Dole, formerly at First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, VA
