Luke's birthday is approaching and he is eagerly anticipating what he might receive from his parents. Never in a million years did Luke think they would let him choose a puppy from the pound as his gift! Lulu, the cute little black puppy with the curly tail, turns out to be quite a handful (and a half). One indication of this would be when the instructor of the group dog obedience class tells Luke that Lulu just is not ready to work with others, and needs (desperately) some private lessons of her own! Persistence and a firm, yet gentle hand pays off in the end for Lulu. The illustrations are hilarious: exaggerated facial expressions and body positions (of both humans and canines) with which real dog owners or friends thereof can all too easily identify! An all-around great book for any age reader. This would make a humorous and highly appropriate gift for a new puppy owner. The author and illustrator are (not surprisingly) both dog owners. Highly recommended. 2006 (orig. 2004), Running Press Kids, Ages 7 to 10.—Cindy L. Carolan
