Library Journal - Library JournalPreS-This is a visually pleasing book of 14 well-known childhood lullabies primarily from the English tradition, with "El Coqu ," a Puerto Rican lullaby in Spanish and English, and the ageless "Kumbaya," a black spiritual, included for balance. The double-page spreads include lyrics and luxurious illustrations of cozy sleeping children, comforting parents, and animals resting. Downing explains in the preface that, "A melody line is provided in the borders to give the reader the essence of the song, but the lullabies can be read or sung to a different tune." Separating the tunes from the text makes it difficult for novices to connect the words and the melody. For most of the familiar songs, this may not pose a problem, but for "Baby's Boat," the 6/8 time setting changing over to 3/4 may create a challenge. Clearly, the music is meant to be incidental. The detailed watercolor illustrations are what shine here, and they will give parents and toddlers much to pore over again and again.-Mollie Bynum, formerly at Chester Valley Elementary School, Anchorage, AK Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.
Beautiful color pictures illustrate a collection of classic lullabies. A must-have for any family nursery.
