Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
Fantastic, humorous watercolor illustrations dress up this already-captivating bedtime tale about a golden-haired princess who cannot get to sleep. Every time she tries, different creatures outside the castle disturb her. The likeable creatures consist of a fire-breathing dragon, clanking knights, a trio of ghosts, a stomping giant, roly-poly tolls, green goblins, and a plethora of forest animals like bears, wolves, owl, bats. They are very apologetic when they realize that they are causing a problem for the princess and as a group they graciously decide to offer her a lullabyhullabaloo. The lullaby meets with success and the princess falls asleep, but in a fun twist, her snoring is so loud that it disturbs the creatures. The book's format is unique and entertaining. Each double-page spread contains a fold out page that offers an extra visual of the creature(s). Children will want to hear and look at this book repeatedly because of its singsong rhythm and whimsical illustrations. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-Fold-out pages and an unusual plot twist make this book a bedtime delight. Little Princess is ready for bed, but she can't sleep-outside her window a dragon is roaring, knights are clanking, ghosts are oooooing, a giant is stamping, trolls are guzzling, and forest animals are hooting and calling. She tells each of them to ``SSH!''; when readers unfold the facing page, they see the noisy offender's sheepish response. When the ruckus finally abates, the Little Princess starts crying, so the whole crew unites for a ``Lullabyhullaballoo.'' Then none of them can sleep for all the royal snoring! Bright, crisp, watercolor-and-pen cartoons; large format; and a repetitive text make this a fun-packed choice for reading aloud. The delicacy of the fold-out pages will require some adult supervision, however.-Claudia Cooper, Ft. Stockton Independent School District, TX

    perfect for toddlers

The book has beautiful illustrations as expected from Mick Inkpen. However, my 5 year old thought the book was for younger readers and I agree. It would be perfect for 2-4 year olds.

My 2 year old loves this book!

This is the first book that my 24 month old asks me to read over and over again -- in the same night. She will also "read" the book to herself: "go clink clank . . . who me . . . yes you", "ooo, ooo . . . who me, who me . . . yes you, yes you", "giant stomp . . . take off boots . . . yes you", (wrinkled brow of concern when princess cries), "lullabyhullaby-hoo". She follows the story, gets concerned when the princess cries, loves the illustrations, and doesn't even try to rip the pages.

My 2 year old daughter LOVES this bedtime story!!!!

I decided to check out this book based on a newspaper review of it. Well, my daughter is 2 years old and absolutely loves this story. She asks for it every evening. It has made our bedtime ritual totally stress free because she asks for the book , we read it together and she even is beginning to say some of the words especially the 'Sshhh' part and the 'yes you' refrains. It is adorable. A great story about a little princess that every little princess will enjoy! The age on the book says 5-8 , I think they underestimated this story.
